joining me now for more as a former fbi special agent and msnbc national security and enlist, clint watts. the parents may have some responsibility here. you are fbi, or you have lad investigations into instances of mass violence. how are the role of the parents fit into an investigation like the one that is being conducted by law enforcement after the tragedy in highland park? >> thank you. there is a few things that we should know. one, we have to go through each state. it is a bit of a patchwork in this country. there is red flag laws, the culpability of parents. in each state, there are different rules. it is hard to know exactly how each come is going to come out in the trial, that is the biggest part. the bigger part, what those thresholds that parents are responsible for when assessing their own children? how will they be held accountable for that? and most cases, you're going to look to a doctor, a forensic psychologist. you want to do some sort of assessment and come to her conclusion that a person is a threat or a harm to themselves and others. that is usually the same threshold
