the connections the former presidents, we want to bring in nbc news security analyst clint watts, clint, it's great talking to about stuff like this. we're looking ahead of course a tuesday and thursday in the testimony will be hearing, especially as what committee members are -- the marshaling of the mob. of course the connections that these extremist groups like proud boys had with the former president, and what the former president knew about the actions that they intended to carry out that day. talk first to me, about how you see this documentary having significance in these hearings? >> the most interesting thing, he has been, through this entire thing is a federal crime that was filmed by everybody that was committing crimes. that's the consistent thing. there is an overwhelming amount of evidence, this documentary puts it together in a way that may be the common person in the country, doesn't really understand. you've heard a lot of discussion from republicans at times about this being just tourists who are at the capitol. but the two groups, with conspiracy charges the proud boy

clint watts worked as a consultant for the anti- terrorism division.t the foreign policy resurgence and nbc analyst. i want to start with the phone call. we don't know who the president called. just support staff. how broad of a category is that, and how much access can a person like that have to have heard or seen something that the midi thinks would be critical to their investigation? >> when you consider the way the committee put this out, it's right it the end of their hearing. what we expect to be the final hearing on prime time, next thursday. they will be focused on the minute by minute accounting of january 6th, sl. the minutes that the capitol was under attack and what was happening in the white house. it is very likely that this is someone who could shed a lot of light on what was happening inside the white house at that time. if they were support staff, they would've had a lot of access to the former president. potentially being able to corroborate. we know for example that the former president spent january 6th watching what was happening o

joining me now for more as a former fbi special agent and msnbc national security and enlist, clint watts. the parents may have some responsibility here. you are fbi, or you have lad investigations into instances of mass violence. how are the role of the parents fit into an investigation like the one that is being conducted by law enforcement after the tragedy in highland park? >> thank you. there is a few things that we should know. one, we have to go through each state. it is a bit of a patchwork in this country. there is red flag laws, the culpability of parents. in each state, there are different rules. it is hard to know exactly how each come is going to come out in the trial, that is the biggest part. the bigger part, what those thresholds that parents are responsible for when assessing their own children? how will they be held accountable for that? and most cases, you're going to look to a doctor, a forensic psychologist. you want to do some sort of assessment and come to her conclusion that a person is a threat or a harm to themselves and others. that is usually the same threshold

clint watts laid out a few of the notes from people reacting to tweets that donald trump sent out. were to go to a criminal court, what is the standard for donald trump being held responsible for the words or his tweets. >> it's a great question. and it's sort of points right to what we call black letter conspiracy law. generally speaking, you are responsible as a conspirator. any conspirator for the reasonable foreseeable consequences of your words and your conduct. three people dpo in to rob a bank. one of them is armed. the other two know the person is armed they don't intend to use the firearm in the bank, but bad things happen when people go into banks with guns, and a teller is murdered. all three of the bank robbers are responsible for the bank robbery and for the murder. because it's reasonably foreseeable if you bring a gun to a bank robbery, something really, really bad can happen. so to your question, any conspirator, mr. trump, any con spear tort is responsible for the consequences of their words and their conduct. that's plaque letter conspiracy law. >> let me play som
