let's add to the discussion, former fbi special agent and msnbc national security analyst, clint watts welcome in. investigators right now i want to go off of what frank just said. is that what they are focusing on right now? sourcing out that gun? what else could they be focusing on it now? >> oh ways in the situations one of the key things is to make sure that if you believe it is -- really is. across the board over the last one or two decades, particularly in the age of terrorism, trying to determine if it's a lone actor. they have accomplishes or support. everything we have seen so far seems to suggest that it was one shooter that showed up. possibly the same shooter showing up at both locations. separately they are definitely trying to put together a lot of leads that are coming in. and this picture is going out. when the picture goes out they want to see what comes in. that is part of the reason why they did that. noting that this may be somebody who -- maybe know something about the shooting or was involved in the shooting. the other thing they're gonna look at is where they're

let's bring in msnbc -- clint watts, former fbi special agent, clint, let's start with the situation in torrance, white van we've been showing to our viewers. can you explain what law enforcement is doing, what they're thinking as they encounter situations like that? >> yeah, it's important to note, i've seen many comments on social media. why is it taking so long. or what are they doing. what they do want to make sure is that they aren't increasing the risk around the situation. what you saw them doing, was a very smart approach to bring to armored vehicles, front and back, you saw the approach from the rear end, they took their time, they were trying to gauge what was inside the van, what were they approaching. oftentimes, if there's a person in there trying to see -- when they come out peacefully. that's part of what their efforts were, and why they were moving deliberately. next, you saw them move up to do the search. they moved in a tactical way. they open the doors to do that search warrant. that's what we're waiting to hear now. it was a very textbook way to do these sorts of

joining me now is nbc news senior capitol hill correspondent, garrett haake and clint watts. the who is this guy? >> well, solomon pena was a convicted felon who ran for a house district. a state house district in the albuquerque area and lost. police allege he then visited the homes of several democratic lawmakers to complain about an election that had somehow been stolen from him. after that, police allege he ended up hiring these four men and went along with them to fire in many case, more than a dozen rounds into the homes of these same officials to whom he complained. there's some pretty terrifying stuff here. one of the victims says her 10-year-old daughter came into her room and thought she felt something on her face and felt like there was sand in her bed, could she sleep with her mother. the next morning, she went in and found bullets that had come through. the sandy feeling was sawdust in her bed. this was a case bad enough on its face, with pena charged with more than a dozen crimes now. it could have been significantly worse had anyone be hit by any of these drive
