[laughter] i think president clinton was a very good steward of the economy. he made the right economic decisions, we had eight years of basically peace and prosperity under president clinton. now, you could make an argument about could more have been achieved with that peace and prosperity, but he, the difficulty of the decision making wasn't as great as what's being faced right now. on the other hand, that's also very liberating. not only do you have the chance to be great, but when you're facing problems like this, the other little mistakes, little stories, they just exnt -- can't, you know, so bill richardson doesn't become secretary of commerce, it's a personal tragedy for them. it might hurt the cause, but it doesn't become a metaphor for the administration the way similar things that happened in the early days of lin clinton did. >> speaking of such things, you and i lived through the wildly successful clinton health care reform effort. but there was something magical about bill clinton in 1992. i went on to tell the guy there was a guy who helped lay the foundation for so much of this. a young man we noticed in 1984 and 1985 that middle class america and asian america was not being represented, their concerns were not being dressed, and they were -- addressed. i thought back on the great leaders of this organization, from chuck robb, to dick gephardt, to bruise babbitabbit. john jones. obviously to the great chairman in 1990 and 1991. i thought about the great ag secreta secretary. the great leader in the senator joe lieberman. the honor reliable joe long. i thought about the honorable roy romer. i thought about ellen tauscher and the great senator from indiana. i thought about my dear friend and vice chairman and partner in chairing this organization, the great then governor and senator now and my immediate prepared ses -- predecessor. for we have all been a part of something very special because largely if not mainly because of the courage, determination and tenacity of a

clinton. then obama came up. i had not heard of him that much.ad to catch up on a lot of reading. i am looking forward to reading your book, sir. host: why secretary of state and not vice president? guest: he said very early on that he had picture for that job before the primaries were over -- picked her for that job before the primaries were over. she was never seriously considered for vice president. the conversation boiled down to senator clinton saying that i do not want to go through vetting unless you are serious about meeting the job. there was plenty that they thought was not known, especially about her husband's business activities, presidential foundation records, donor lists, that kind of thing. the feeling was that, especially with her husband, former president clinton, he would be difficult to control and he would be a distraction to a campaign process, that it would be rid -- easier to regulate that inside of the cabinet after the election. one thing is true, he came out of the primaries with a deep respect for how tough she was and

but the kennedys decided look, they're had always been tension between the kennedys and the clintons. there was a sort of rival claim to being the spiritual leaders of the party, and that rupture was very real and painful at least on the clinton side. i think it was difficult for the kennedys, too. >> host: did the selection of july and as barack obama is running mate surprise you? >> guest: i will admit to being surprised. yes, i will. knowing they had tension in the senate, senator biden was the chairman of the foreign relations committee. he didn't really treat this young senator with a big profile very well and he fairly treated him with disdain and that can help in the campaign and the primary process when biden himself was a candidate. they obviously set that aside. the candidate himself, obama wanted biden from the get go. the process unfolded and came out the end but as i explained in the book he was frustrated with the short list and while biden was his pick i think he wanted something more. and look at them today. biden, you know, generally they think inside the white house
