so you worked on presidential campaigns, in the clinton administration, and one of the catalysts forng this book is when you learned al gore didn't have friends. what happened? >> well, i wouldn't say al gore doesn't have any friends. what happened was, i was vetting him for the vice presidency and i went to see a wise old hand in washington who asked me a series of questions before we went for the final interview. and he said, i don't really care about his views on the mx missile or noxious greenhouse gases, i kcare about whether he has close friends, because if you don't have close friend, you can't be an effective president. so he went to the interview and asked gore to list his friends outside of a couple of members of congress or his brother-in-law and the senator then just kind of stumbled and he came out of the interview and harry was just really concerned that somebody who couldn't kind of list a series of close friends might be more challenged as president, having watched johnson, who he thought was basically friendless, struggle in his final years as president. >> so you sa
