the county was over here, clinton county.cinct had not reported although the nice ladies of clinton county say they did their job just fine and rorted all the information to the state committee. there was a mixup in counting the votes. we only had 98, 99% of the vote. mitt romney was still a little bit behind. when the final votes came out in this small county, 437 votes, 357 for rick santorum. that was enough to put governor romney over the top the closest iowa contest in history. as you noted just a moment ago when you talked about david and dan, that's where we go next, the state of new hampshire. one footnote on that. i'll let them discuss it in more detail when you get to them. the reason rick santorum is talking about blue collar politics, huckabee went on a christian evangelical message in new hampshire. not a lot of them in new hampshire. if rick santorum is to follow up iowa with a boom in new hampshire he has to spread it out and start talking about the economy. >> it was such a great moment back in clinton county.

it was in clinton county, iowa. that's in the east. clinton county is most famous for at one point having the largeest sawmill in the world, setting a record with their fire response team. what seems to have happened, why this took so long is there was that one precinct with results that apparently the state he headquarters didn't tabulate. i spoke to the now famous edith pfeffer. she said we turned in those results around 7:40, 7:50. the problem seems to be that there were some tab lating issues here in des moines with the state headquarters. i guess they didn't realize that they didn't have those numbers. and this might happen a lot in elections. usually it all gets squared away the next day. but of course, here we were with an election resting on just a handful of votes. so every single precinct mattered. and when they discovered they were missing a couple, we had to wait and track down each one. also, and you can see and you're hearing video from, of course, all of the various candidate parties. it was so interesting because here w

and that night when the numbers were coming in we can't forget what happened in clinton county, right talked to the two officials there. there was an issue with the count and the numbers and where were they. so what is this telling us about iowa and the system and how everything went down that night? >> well, i think in fairness, i mean, vote counting is never a perfect process, right? we've seen these kinds of problems in other contests in other races in other places. however, i was there on caucus night at one of the caucus sites and it was chaotic, kyra. there were some precincts there in my area that didn't have the right numbers and it took a little longer for them to resolve them. they resolved all of their numbers. it's an imperfect process and it just basically tells you -- again, with this being the closest, the closest count in iowa caucus history, you were bound to have some kind of problems like these, kyra. >> shannon travis in des moines for us. >>> the other big story coming to us this hour, peter hamby calling in. rick perry going to announce he is out of the race. our
