that's a very real legacy of bob dole, born out of his service to country, his sacrifice, and his commitment to giving something back. i'm also struck by seeing president clintonob dole was majority leader, and of course those were times when they clashed over politics and they certainly were clashing in the 1996 campaign. and i remember being in the room when dole conceded that election. and it was painful. he had tried to become president three times. he also was on the ticket with gerald ford in 1976. he had big ambitions in politics. and those were unrealized when it came to presidential politics. but he spoke of bill clinton after a fiery and certainly contentious campaign that he was not any enemy. he was any opponent. and he congratulated him and he promised to work with him for the good of the country. if you look back on that moment and then you see bill clinton in the audience there today, in the congregation today, it says a lot about the time, it says a lot about our politics, and it is a lesson of american civility. andrea? >> kelly, thank you so much. and i want to bring in our panel. dole showed. in that moment, in that ceremony that bill clinton gave him the medal of freedom, bob dole takes the podium and he starts his speech by saying, i, robert j. dole, as if he was about to take the inaugural address, and the room cracks up. he was able to laugh at himself, he was able to laugh at our system. he was sometimes sharp with it, sometimes a little bit of an edge to it. he certainly had a reputation early on as being a partisan hatchet and we shouldn't romanticize that, but he recognized that politics was about people, about relationships that you could be in opposite parties and still have respect and an admiration for each other as public servants. he served in world war ii, gave so much to his country. you see the tributes today coming from both sides of the aisle. i remember from that would be the case with today's politicians. if you look back at what we're saying today about bob dole, will people say that about them in 20 or 30 years. >> that's so interesting. i seem to recall a time when he was on "meet the press," and he was reminded that he was like the one who had bee

dole himself had presidential aspirations. in fact, he stood as the running mate for gerald ford in 1976 and then some 20 years later was selected by the republicans to stand against bill clintont a successful campaign for bob dole. shortly after that he retired from politics but he certainly remained a key figure in his party. there was a fiscally conservative, in terms of financial matters, he was a very stalwart in terms of his beliefs, and a stoic figure. i think it is fair to say that about him, especially as far as his own disabilities were concerned, very badly injured in the second world war. he was a key figure in getting the 1990 americans with disability act passed, that is a law that safeguards people in the workplace with disabilities. he will be remembered for that. i've been speaking to donald critchlow, a professor in american history at arizona state university. he said bob dole had an unlikely political career after being severely injured in the second world war as a young man. he barely survived the second world war and spent over a year in hospital. he was a patriot and he came back and ran for congress and later elected to the senate from kansas which is i

and just around one scene, i did a book on dole's race against clinton, 25 years ago. middle of the campaign, i'm there one saturday afternoon, and said you know, bill clinton was upset at you a couple years ago when you went on television, the morning that clinton's mother, virginia kelley, had passed away, and dole was that acidic, we need a white water ininvestigation, and dole said to me, he said oh, no. bob dole would never do that. and then his staff checked and realized that he had done that, and so we're sitting there, and talking about mothers of all things. and dole remembered his own mother, bina, who died 13 years earlier, and tear came to his eyes, and it really broke down, and he then remembered the number of -- phone number, and he called her. so he then wrote an apology letter to clinton right in the middle of the campaign, very unusual action, saying i should not have done that. that is not who i am. >> that's a great story. it does say a lot about it. you know, allen simpson, the other thing about what we're losing today is bob dole was the spokespers

dole began his last campaign. the campaign for president. that he would lose to bill clinton in 1996. tive republicans in washington, who didn't believe that compromise with democrats was ever necessary decided that the problem with bob dole was sheila burke. oppressively's from a right-wing group at the time said that if the american people, like hillary clinton, they would love hillary and sheila burke. they told the review in 1990, five that the one consistent theme over every battle of conservatives loss was a knife in the back from bob dole, frequently at the behest of sheila. those republicans feared what it would mean to have sheila berke as white house chief of staff if bob dole won the presidency. but he lost to bill clinton. and one of president clinton's first act, after his second inauguration, was to present bob dole with the presidential medal of freedom. >> i, robert j. dull [applause] do solemnly swear sirens speech. and former officials from both parties at dole's funeral service here in washington at the washington national cathedral. we saw former president bill clintony side with the likes of former vice president pence, dick cheney, quayle, and so many others. it was a moment of unity that bob dole certainly would have relished. president biden and dole's daughter, robin, were among those who delivered eulogies. >> we serve together for 25 years. we disagreed, but we were never disagreeable with one another. not one time that i can think of. i found bob to be a man of principle, pragmatism, and enormous integrity. he came into the arena with certain guiding principles that began with devotion to country, to fair play, to decency. to dignity, to honor. to literally attempting to find the common good. >> i will miss him so much. i think i will still talk to him every night. i love you, dad, and i promise, you will never walk alone. >> after that service, the dole family led by his beloved widow, elizabeth, went to the world war r memorial here in washington, the memorial that bob dole had championed. there, the actor, tom hanks, spoke of dole's legac

this missing piece of service, i think that's something bob dole and clinton wanted to agree upon, nationalmerican public service, it's some sort of additive that you can't really -- you don't really see it until after they serve in congress and you see what a veteran is like in congress versus a nonveteran sometimes. >> you're absolutely right. and we see this certainly with the vietnam and world war ii veterans, that class. there it was danny inoue or bob dole, that common experience of serving had a remarkable impact on all of them. as you may recall, bob dole wore john mccain's bracelet, which he only told mccain years after mccain was in the senate. there was that connection, that service, that commitment to the country that gave them a basis on which they could build. no question they had an enormously -- >> he wanted to be president. you don't run three times at different times if you don't want to be president. you know, he would joke about how much he missed not becoming president. but how much did that -- how much would you say that hung over him? >> you know, i honestly don't bel

dole in that category. he was also a chair of the republican national committee. i remember when he certainly -- when bill clinton the person who is going to show him around and he said that meaning i'm somebody who knows my way around washington and things that you want to do will have to come through me. one of the things i remember the most about bob dole was when daniel lenowaw passed away, the democratic senator from hawaii. bob dole was wounded in italy, they were wounded a hillside away from one another in italy. bob dole sustained injuries to his arm, daniel the same and he -- they talked and kind of got one another through that period during world war ii and one of the most touching moments i've ever seen in congressional history happened in december of 2012. when daniel lenoway passed away, bob dole came to the capitol rotunda, where he was lying in state and elizabeth dole came and bob dole got up from his wheelchair and walked across the rotunda to the casket and said i didn't want daniel to see me like this and touched the casket. it was really a striking moment. again, two people who worked across t

dole himself had presidential aspirations. he stood as the running mate in 1976 for gerald ford, and then some 20 years later was selected by the republicans to stand against bill clintonined a key figure in his party. he was fiscally conservative in terms of financial matters. he was very stalwart in terms of his beliefs. he was a stoic figure as well, especially as far as his own disabilities were concerned. very badly injured in the second world war. he was a key figure in getting the 1990 americans with disabilities act passed. that's a law that safeguards people in the workplace with disabilities. he will be remembered for that. i think he'll also be remembered for his personality. he had quite a great sense of humour and a wit about him, self—deprecating at times, and he was recently awarded the congressional gold medal. at the ceremony he thanked those who had offered him kind words. he said they probably weren't true, but they were nice. a decision to extend covid passes in wales to pubs and restaurants could made later this week. welsh ministers are to consider whether to expand the scheme over the next week, with the next covid rules review due on friday. fir
