it is bug st of 101 near cloverdale. some evacuation orders are still in effect. >> ktvu tom vacar joins us live from sonoma county with the latest. tom >> well, this is starting to get really exciting. i just looked at the numbers last year at this time. we had 1866 fires, but only 4900 acres burned this year we have 2103 fires, 66,000 acres burned. that's 13 times the acreage. this fire certainly contributed to that. and here's what we learned today. this is when the point fire is at its second most dangerous. it sits there smoking and smoldering, with thousands of hotspots, big and small, waiting for the winds to reignite its fury. calmer weather has given firefighters a chance to catch up. >> just making sure those hot spots are good and put out so we don't have any issues with any of that flaring up, except for the hottest of hot spots. >> the fire has pretty much laid down right now at midday, but should those winds come up again ? there is just massive amounts of tinder dry material ready to burn, and the major wi

sean chitnis is live in cloverdale for us this morning, bringing us the latest update, sean good morning. gianna. good morning. yeah, and it's important that you mentioned that red flag warning because at the update that happened here at base camp in cloverdale. they said they were going to act as if that was in effect, even before it begins, or if they're crews are just outside of that area. that's how serious those conditions are, and that is going to be a crucial part of their response today as they expected to be another difficult day, dealing with a variety of challenges. so let's again update you on the latest that we have coming out of that briefing that wrapped up just a little more than an hour ago. go the fire so far has burned around 1100 acres, and we believe that it is 20% contained based on the information that we're getting. here it is located. southeast of lake sonoma. and we were told at this briefing that 1 firefighter was injured yesterday, but we are still waiting for an update on that fire fighters conditions. cal fire says this is really unusual. force anoma county

the us geological survey says it happened just east of cloverdale and 14 miles north of healdsburg. cloverdale firefighters told us they felt a small movement, but so far there are no reports of any damage or injuries. the earthquake was big enough for the usgs to send out an alert to phones ahead of time. those notifications went to anyone with an android phone or the my shape app and myshake app that is installed. that early warning system just got an upgrade this week. it's now using gps data and 1500 seismic sensors to give people more time to drop, cover, and hold on. good afternoon, and thanks for joining us. i'm j.r. stone new at 430, a massive response from firefighters today, putting out a fire at an apartment building in san francisco. this is near taraval and 47th avenue. san francisco fire says the fire started around 215 at a two story apartment building. more than 40 firefighters helped put it out. fortunately everyone who lives there got out okay and no one was hurt. now to the day of celebration in san francisco. despite the gloomy weather, the city's second juneteen

and where this fire is burning now around the point area around cloverdale, healdsburg, the trees are holding a lot of fuel moisture. so it's a very different story. three months from now, you know all that. but so firefighters are doing a nice job on this fire. as you know, they've got some they've cut a bunch of lines today. they got good containment for not they're only 20% containment. but they did a heck of a job getting those fire lines cut last night up on the ridge lines. and they've they've really done a nice job isolating the fire. the temperatures are not all that hot or they're running in the low 80s. humidities are not all that low. they're in the mid 25% range near the fire. so that's not really that cool or that moist. and we're going to continue with these conditions throughout the night with the winds actually coming out of the north a little bit right around here tonight around 11. but they're actually going to be lessened. they're not going to be as strong. northerly wind will blow the fire back on itself a little bit or back towards where it came from last night. b

that fire burning southeast of lakes sonoma, just south of cloverdale, cal fire says crews are strengthening containment lines and at last check more than 1000 acres have burned with only 20% containment or shawn chitnis has been speaking to firefighters in sonoma county. here on the eastern side of lake sonoma. we can see the fire with smoke rising into the sky. even helicopters as part of that response from the air as cal fire enters a 2nd day, trying to get control over the fire now we are told that while they have made significant progress, they also see plenty of challenges ahead on the 2nd day, more than 400 people have been evacuated and another 400 are in a warning zone and need to be on standby to leave. the difficult factors firefighters face today include the win a rough terrain, especially on the west side >>of >>the fire is created from previous fire while the last 2 years were considered mild, it's been a tough start to the season this year has it's unusual to see a fire like this and sonoma county in mid june. >>the work for these firefighters today is to protect those homes w

now to a live look at the staging grounds in cloverdale, firefighters there right now boosting their efforts. because of the state of emergency. additional state and federal disaster aid is also available now the fire is about 40%. contained yeah. some of the realities. firefighters are facing right now. this is from the sonoma county sheriff showing a helicopter crew in the middle of the night in the middle of the night time rescue a firefighter heard was pulled to safety. this while smoke and flames were burning down below now because of this quick action, the firefighter will recover. well, the state's newest wildfire is burning and calvary's county. it's called the arrow fire, and it exploded to nearly 55. acres. right now it's 20%. contain well, it broke out. keene. tv's report you can actually hear exactly why firefighters really couldn't stop the fire from ballooning. >>60 miles an >>hour >>a problem. for crew. but grew the arrow fire >>in just >>a few short >>hours. >>main goal for crews cut off >>the head of the >>you're out of game plan once we started seeing it spread with

it is bug st of 101 near cloverdale.uation orders are still in effect. >> ktvu tom vacar joins us live from sonoma county with the latest. tom >> well, this is starting to get really exciting. i just looked at the numbers last year at this time. we had 1866 fires, but only 4900 acres burned this year we have 2103 fires, 66,000 acres burned. that's 13 times the acreage. this fire certainly contributed to that. and here's what we learned today. this is when the point fire is at its second most dangerous. it sits there smoking and smoldering, with thousands of hotspots, big and small, waiting for the winds to reignite its fury. calmer weather has given firefighters a chance to catch up. >> just making sure those hot spots are good and put out so we don't have any issues

bay as we pan farther north, seeing more 80s on the map and a couple spots at 90 degrees around cloverdalearlake. those temperatures won't be as hot heading into the second half of the weekend. if you're going to the san mateo county fair this weekend, upper 60s both saturday and sunday, mix of clouds and sunshine. the six to ten day outlook pushes us back to a slight signal towards above normal temperatures in the short term. we hit the midpoint of the month, the eight to 14 day outlook shows a below normal temperature pattern trying to creep in from the north. in the short term, the seven-day forecast shows an up and down pattern, near normal temperatures giving way to a bit of a warm-up by tuesday, the warmest day for all parts of the bay area, but only sends temperatures farther into the 70s around the bay while inland temperatures climb up to at least 90 degrees. that's the forecast high for most of the north bay and in san jose and dropping back to more normal june warmth levels the rest of next week, low 90s inland and the east bay and 80s. on the coast you don't warm up a lot but w

you can see that the layout here, there's healdsburg, geyserville up toward the clover up toward cloverdale. here is a lake sonoma. as you can see right now pointed out for you. and then here is the point fire as we coming closer to get a better look at the terrain. and here is dry creek as you can see running right near the fire zone as far as the current conditions out there right now. now you probably have noticed the winds, even the bay area in general. the winds backed off this morning. they picked up this afternoon. they're still a bit of a breeze out there with winds gusting with these sites around the fire zone, around 14 to 16 to 17 miles an hour. the key change today was the overall wind flow. we had drier conditions out there and as a result, these relative humidity levels have been coming down, coming down quite a bit. so those moisture levels coming down, that's not a good development but still fire crews have been being prepped for the change in the wind flow and also with with the changing conditions out there. here's the forecast model. still breezy for this evening as we he

we're keeping an eye on a grass fire off of the side of geysers road near preston drive north cloverdale. that fire now burning up to 3 acres. but cal fire says that it is moving and then it ha eventually been stopped. well, it actually been stopped. now, there are no reports of any injuries. all right with this. we want look at your 4 zone forecast. taking a look outside at a very dry mount diablo. there's a lightning advisory in place throughout the bay area until tonight, which means a chance for some grass fires. national weather service says they also expect gusty winds. if a thunderstorm does happen, which could increase the chance of a vegetation fire. >> our first chief meteorologist lawrence karnow here to talk about the likelihood of that. yeah, we've had at least 3 lightning strikes already around the bay area. tons of lightning strikes in the high country today, but there's a possibility still we could see a few more out there right now. we've got some of that subtropical moisture that continues to sweep overhead. you see down below in the east bay. all that brown grass out t

we are now at the incident command base here in cloverdale, where that hard work continues as well as on the front lines of that point. fire. just a movement of the fire trucks behind us moments ago. they're definitely still working hard to contain this fire. but the good news is containment has doubled overnight with their work overnight, it was 20% yesterday. today the point fire is now 40% contained and it remains at just over 1200 acres. now, we are told that lower temperatures and lower wind speeds also helped with this. the weather was very much cooperative last night. higher humidity levels as well have kept this fire under control. today the work continues with more than 400 fire personnel, 50 engines and ten dozers on scene to continue battling the flames. an evacuation order remains for people living in the area of dry creek valley, which is home to several private vineyards, so far, two structures have burned and one firefighter was transported with non-life threatening injuries. the sonoma county sheriff's office released video of that rescue of the firefighter yesterday,

on a grass fire burning right now in the east side of geysers road near preston drive north of cloverdale. this fire is being called the preston fire. only right now about 2 acres, but cal fire says that it is moving fast, uphill and of course, fire danger exists right now. let's go lawrence for a deeper lawrence. yeah, you know, just even those images, you can see how brown that grass is out there. so fires getting going in the afternoon when the winds are starting to pick up. yeah, that could be a problem. and of course, we've got some of that monsoonal moisture rolling in overhead to with the lightning strikes popping up around the bay area. that could be more issues. you see some of that subtropical moisture over the east bay hills right now. >> continue to roll on by. we have had a few lightning strikes today around the bay area. we're not done just yet. you see couple of them pop up there. that moisture actually rotating around a ridge of high pressure, bringing some of those lightning strikes scattered about the bay area. that's what's going to be that's not very unstable air in th

triple digit heat possible. 102 in cloverdale is one of the hot spots across the entire region. now, i mentioned the records. they're going to be out of reach. way out of reach in san francisco and oakland, 15, 20 degrees below record territory. even farther inland, four degrees below a record in santa rosa, about seven degrees below in livermore, eight degrees below the 99-degree record in san jose. and farther down the line, things flip a bit. the six to ten-day outlook from the climate presixth center shows a decent chance of below normal temperatures trying to sneak down from the north by the time the summer solstice arrives, june 20th this year. we'll keep an eye on that over the next several days. in the short term we are cooking a bit as we head through the next several day, the next 24 hours, with temperatures above average and then setting into a slightly above average temperature pattern as we hit the back end of the workweek and the weekend. one day of below average temperatures on thursday. that's the case for the whole bay area. thursday does look like the coolest d

the point fire started just before 1:00 this afternoon west of cloverdale, cal fire says it is burning in dry brush. and right now the fire is 15% con it started in the area of stewarts point and skaggs springs road near lake sonoma. this is north of healdsburg, ktvu zac sos standing by. live near the front lines with the latest on the firefight. zach, how's it going? >> well, julie, as we have seen with other recent wildfires over the last two weeks, the real issue here is the wind. it is really driving this fire. this fire first reported, as you mentioned, just west of geyserville, just after around 1230, actually, you can see the smoke billowing from the hillside right now. at last check from cal fire. this fire is sitting at some 300 acres, only 15% contained. mandatory evacuations are now in place for an area north and east of chemise road. south of stewarts point. skaggs spring road and west of dry creek. this is an area filled with vineyards, a number of homes, so cal fire crews are now actively working to protect structures in the area from both the skies. they are dumping wate

this is happening between cloverdale and also healdsburg just to the west here of highway 101. so as you get you into a closer view of this fire, here's lake sonoma. that's right around where it started. then that fire made that quick advance off towards the south and the east yesterday afternoon and evening, right here near bradford mountain, at an elevation of 1224. so really, at this point, firefighters and the way the wind has been blowing, trying to keep this fire from spreading beyond dry creek road and off towards the south. so i see some occasional gusts tonight up to about 25 right now it's only out of the northwest at 12, so overall wind is starting to become less and tomorrow we'll see wind gusts, maybe up to about 25. that would be the max and a temperature of a of 87. still some very low humidity at 14. and it's at least a thousand acres. so we could see containment numbers actually go up tomorrow without any major wind events expected in the forecast. again, firefighters putting so many resources on this. we have more live reports on the fire coming up tonight at

here's cloverdale and healdsburg. it's in between those just off towards the west. wind's been blowing, it's been pushing the smoke and also the fire right here from around lake sonoma where it started towards dry creek road. this is also around bradford mountain. so currently see temperature down to 67. so we're getting colder winds only out of the north at eight. we could get some occasional gusts overnight up to about 25. tomorrow winds out of the west at 14 sustained maybe some occasional gusts in the afternoon up to about 25 and low humidity at 15. so all in all, the worst of the wind we had this weekend is going down, but we still could get those occasional gusts smoke tomorrow. look at the key at the top. that blue is some haze, so we'll see some haze from the fire through the north bay. maybe here to the east bay. that's as we roll into the overnight hours. as we head into tomorrow morning, most of any kind of haze and smoke should be localized to the fire. and maybe down here towards napa and sonoma. so right now we're looking at the highest risk of that sm

right now at cloverdale, 96 at santa rosa. so all through our inland areas it is hot.reline we've got some mid to upper 80s right now and 92 degrees at san mateo. so you can see this is a very hot afternoon and the 24 hour temperature change is very impressive. it is anywhere from 15 to about 18 degrees warmer in many locations right now than at this time yesterday. and that includes san francisco, 16 degrees warmer and oakland 17 degrees warmer. and not surprisingly, we have a heat advisory in effect until 8:00 this evening for all locations away from the coast

cloverdale firefighters told us they felt a small movement, but there are no reports of any damage orinjuries in the east bay. now a fast moving grass fire slowed down traffic yesterday. east of livermore. the greenville fire burned 44 acres right along the altamont pass and five 8-80. the fire started just before 11 a.m, and firefighters stopped the spread within an hour. no one was hurt, and it's now 100% contained. it's been a busy week for firefighters in alameda county and beyond. yesterday's fire is the fourth grass fire in the altamont pass area. just this past week alone, two fire started monday evening, both under control. now the corral fire that burned toward tracy in san joaquin county is now also fully contained. at 14,000 acres, it's the state's largest fire so far this year. cal fire says a vegetation fire that started wednesday in napa county is also fully contained. the crystal fire burned about 60 acres south of calistoga for firefighters had to go to the hospital due to the tough conditions, and cal fire says crews will remain in the area for the next couple of days
