alden and jerry allison decided to stay close to home here and work with buddy holly in clovis. had to put together another band. he knew waylon jennings, who grew up in littlefield, not too far away from lubbock, and he was a dj on the local radio station. he had had previous studio time with tommy allsop, and it was through i believe tommy that they found a drummer in carl bunch, who was very young at the time. and so that became the crickets band that toured with buddy on the winter dance party tour. on this tour, there was also this up-and-coming, vibrant young gentleman by the name of ritchie valens, who was only 17 at the time. and the old man of the group, 27, jp richardson, who was better known to fans as the big bopper, was also on that tour. they embarked from the upper midwest and traveled on buses that were not well maintained, would break down frequently -- buddy was a little fed up with the bus, so he chartered a flight for he and his bandmates, who at that point would have been waylon jennings and tommy allsop, so they could leave clearlake that night and fly to f
