clyburn. majority whip in the house and helping us in studio with our questions is sarah ferris with politico, and lisa mascaro, chief correspondent with the associated press. lisa, you have the first question. lisa: good morning, thank you for making time here. we wanted to talk -- obviously, very big week in washington and on the hill with the impeachment proceedings. looking back now that the impeachment trial is over and the outcome was in so many ways foreshadowed, do you have any second thoughts? what do you think will be the way history -- you as a teacher of history, what will be the lesson here of the impeachment? rep. clyburn: first of all, thanks so much for having me. i apologize for the raspy voice. it has been that kind of week. well, i think we did our duty. the house following the dictates of the constitution did what was necessary under the constitution. we went to the senate, made the presentation. it is kind of interesting. most of the senators that have spoken on the subjec

clyburn: yes. am not going to sit here and matterhat it does not who gets at the top of the ticket with what we will be able to do in south carolina. in a south carolina we are trying to rebuild our party. i'm trying to get jimmy harrison elected to the u.s. senate. i will be looking at which candidate will be the most helpful to jimmy harrison and others. we have two other candidates, at least other two who are in the second congressional district and the fifth congressional district that i think could make good candidates. i would love to seem somebody at the top of the ticket who will be helpful to them. we need to rebuild the democratic party in south carolina. >> what kind of candidate, if we could probe that a little jamier, would most help harrison and to those congressional democratic candidates you talked about? while we are on that senate race, jamie harrison running to take on lindsey graham, the republican. how is senator graham doing? the popularity of trump and the whole fallout from

do you think james clyburn's endorsement coand be a game r for joe biden? >> i do think that seals the deal for joe biden. congressman fiber's -- congssman clyburn's endorsement in south carolina. he is one of the highest writing african-americans americans in the country and he is beloved in the state of south atlantic congressman--south carolina. congressman clyburn in 2008 did not come out for barack obama until the cvention, and with hillary clinton in 2016 he came out in nevada. but this endorsement was particularly moving behe evoked the name of his late wife, emily clyburn, who was his partner and also beloved by the state, and it flagged for the constituents of south carolina, the electorate, that the democratic party is 60% african-american in this state, andt is majority african-american women in the state of south carolina. it flagged for than that james clyburn is directly behind joe biden, and if there was any question about who they should turn outor, it is now time to vote for joe. laura: doesn't help joe biden come super tuesday, where the p

is an endorsement from jim clyburn or anyone else, is a jim clyburn very important and can it changer another? >> i don't know if it can change the outcome. until recently, joe biden was strong in south carolina. if someone else had gotten it, that would have been an entirely different story. in politics an endorsement only goes so far, it can be an important co-sign, important val days that that person can be trusted on a certain set of issues. in 2016 i remember there were certain influencers or celebrities or criminal justice racial justice advocates that endorsed hillary clinton and then would say we know that bill clinton did the crime bill, joe biden wrote the crime bill, bernie voted for the crime bill but she apologized it and she has laid out a path forward to curb some of the negative impacts of mass incarceration. i think the validateors can be important for a certain segment of the electorate, that doesn't mean it's going to make the difference. you still have to get the people to the polls. to her point i think the critical piece here is going to be the gotv that he gets

how much does the clyburn endorsement matter? usually of the mind that few endorsements make a difference. in this case, is this something that could maybe push some of those 15% undecided? >> look, if you're a democrat in the state of south carolina and running for a seat, that clyburn endorsement is the one you want. it is the one that matters. obviously it's coming with only a few days before the primary, so how great an effect that it will have on democratic voters that are undecided remains to be seen. when i was at the tom steyer event in orangeburg, i spoke to voters about the endorsement, asked how big an impact it would be, every one of them said i respect clyburn. if you're an undecided member, you'll probably take in what he said. some voters said they were rewatching the sort of not press conference but remarks that clyburn gave yesterday for biden, they were rewatching them to hear that support. it doesn't hurt biden to walk into saturday with the endorsement of clyburn, and i think past saturday will biden for super

as always great to talk to you congressman jim clyburn. thank you. >> thanks for having me. >> all right. for more on this, let's bring in michael hopskin and reena schultz. reena is a republican strategist and founder of the women's public leadership network. michael, you worked on hillary and president obama's campaigns, we are seeing now the campaign for the 2020 nomination goes south and west. for the first time people of color will have a sizable plot of the electric or the participates in the caucus of nevada and the primary and south carolina. it had not been that in the first two states. something many of us have been concerned about for a while now. i put it aside for this discussion. >> how do you weigh this field of candidates of bernie sanders to biden to klobachar and to elizabeth warren and tom steyer, how do you weigh them in terms of the issues that blacks and browns may be concerned about that may not have been as much of a prioritpriority. maybe a concern but not a priority concern to voters they dealt with iowa caucus. >

what's interesting to me is when you talk to those voters is jim clyburn is going to come out today supporting joe biden. does that give him a boost here? or do you see, you know, bernie sanders continue to try to edge out some of his support in south carolina. if it's five points or less and bernie is really up on the heels of joe biden going into super tuesday, it's hard to see whether or not that he's no longer the pragmatic choice. because he's going to have the most delegates. he's going to go in campaigning into that convention very strong. >> all right. we played, mark, the bite of bernie sanders talking about fidel castro. saying he improved literacy when he first came into power in cuba that not all was necessarily bad about him. >> i think about his policies.

you hear congressman clyburn talk about two threats. the threat of a second term of donald trump. he has also talked about the threat of a sanders' candidacy for down-ballot races in south carolina and elsewhere. i think one reason he decided to step forward with this emotional endorsement of joe biden is to try to stop sanders, which i think was really the fundamental dynamic of the debate last night. >> you say that mike bloomberg was less worse than before. is less worse going to cut it? >> well, i think less worse only works if you've got like a billion dollars behind you to spend. >> or 60. >> yeah. so he wasn't as terrible as he was in the first debate. i wouldn't say he was good. but you can see some of the other candidates being forced to drop out in a week after super tuesday. one of the advantages mike bloomberg has is he's got a financial cushion that will take him on for at least a little while. >> as we turn from the early primary states, iowa and new hampshire in particular not reflective of the diversity of the american p

clyburn says he's waiting until after tuesday night's democratic debate.sday the south carolina congressman says he will publicly make an endorsement and announce it. he says he owes it to the south carolinan voters. earlier i talked to clyburn about how the bernie sanders caucus would influence south carolina's primary, and he says he's among those worried about sanders' democratic socialist label. >> people are concerned about this whole self-proclaimed democratic socialist. sociali socialism seeks out the student in grade school with something that engendered the citrus reaction of people of a negative nature. people are very concerned about that, and we are trying to rebuild our party in south carolina. we are trying to elect more people to congress. >> joining me right now to discuss, jennifer grenholm, commentator, along with cnn political commentator and former democratic candidate. good to see you both. andrew, how about you first. what's your reaction to clyburn and his concern that south carolina voters seem to have about bernie sanders? >> well,

joining me now is james clyburn. thank you very much.at to see you. >> thanks so much for having me. >> well, what about joe biden in south carolina? he had such iowa and new hampshire. he has to get through nevada before he gets to south carolina. does he look too weak for all of his long-held supporters there? he had a very good base in your state. >> well, i think he still has a good base in the state. i think that all of us are aware that one of the reasons south carolina is where it is in this schedule is because many of us 20 years ago argued profusely for states like south carolina to be moved up in the calendar. because what we were doing is getting iowa caucus, new hampshire's primary defining everybody and then we got to the general elections and we found out that these candidates did not rate well with certain elements within our party. so what i think is going on now is the demographic of our -- and the demographic of new hampshire all about the same. only about 1% african-american. we're now going out to nevada and to south

we had jim clyburn on a short time ago.than a one or two-point win to propel you forward. he says you need a big win to propel you to super tuesday and beyond. my question is, how big? >> look, i'll let you guys be the pundits. i'm the candidate. i've been confident about south carolina because i've worked so hard over 30 or more years here in south carolina, not to run for president, but to have the relationship with the community. i start off with not just jim clyburn, but there's -- before that, fritz hollings. and i've been deeply involved in this community, in this state. and i feel very good about it. felt good about it from the beginning. it's been the launching pad for barrack and i believe for me. we'll see how much i have to win by. i don't want to jinx myself along the line here. i feel very good. i've worked hard to earn these votes, and i think i'll do well. >> obviously, south carolina is about 60% of the people who may show up to vote will be african-american. if you look to the super tuesday map, there are a

but look, congressman clyburn is right.cans have is to run against a nominee who is promoting medicare for all and the elimination of private health care insurance. this is their weakest liability, the number one issue to voters and republicans are counting on running against medicare for all. this is of utmost concern to democrats who know all the data surrounding all the democrats electoral strength on this issue, someone like senator clyburn. and that's why he's saying a socialist running for medicare for all is deeply unpopular and can lend support to president trump. >> the other progressive candidate in the race, elizabeth warren, finishing fourth in nevada. after coming out swinging in the nevada debate, can her campaign kind of regain that momentum? >> it's hard to see how that happens, based on the map, where she has struggled. iowa, new hampshire, being a neighboring state to her own state of massachusetts. it's hard to see any of the things coming up, whether it's south carolina or the big super tuesday states as
