joining us now is democratic congressman james clyburn of south carolina.an. >> good morning. thank you for having me. >> look at that tight smile. >> michael, what do you want to say? congressman, a lot of questions but before we get to that, breaking overnight, congresswoman sheila jackson lee of texas has passed. she announced she had pancreatic cancer in june. i know you put out a statement but just, we wanted to start with just your thoughts and reflections on your friend and colleague, sheila jackson lee. >> well, sheila jackson lee was a very, very good friend. we worked very closely together. you may recall that i spent time as the democratic with and she, in both instances, was my assistant whip. she was one of the people to help me with the caucus, create a strategy necessary to get a bill passed. as you know, we were very, very successful in getting the votes that were necessary for the bill to pass. sheila played a very critical role in that. on a personal basis, sheila was a schoolmate of one of my former students. when yale announced they were

jim clyburn was, as you know, elected to the house in 1994. the first black congressman from south carolina post reconstruction. they developed a legitimate friendship. not a washington friendship, a legitimate friendship in the 90s. and you know, jim clyburn is someone i've covered for a few decades now myself, eddie's old school. he's a man that resets loyalty and tradition and institutions. and so i don't think that it was an accident that you saw him very publicly over the past seven to 10 days endorsing this president, supporting this president publicly, when a lot of democrats were doing the opposite. and he was -- he is not someone that decrees the spotlight, but we had him on the today show just a few days ago for the first time in a number of years. live in the studio, because he wanted to vocally, publicly back this president. and if you parse the language during the course of that conversation, especially now, the benefit of hindsight, that if you parse the language that he used, he said at this morning as well on msnbc. i support t
