mark is at the cme. are you seeing the moves here? what about the futures and what do you expect for how we anticipate the market may move tomorrow? >> it's going to depend whether the rumors turn out to be true because that's really i think been the big driver of buying here, and, you know, i'll be interested to see whether that happened. obviously, the fed is not going to do anything. i think the fed should come out and say we're not doing anything until the other world powers, china, europe, lay off the monetary easing gas pedal. so if the fed comes out and says we're not raising rates until the ecb and china stop killing their currency, i think that could be a precipice for a rally. the one thing for all traders, every time we've seen this trading pattern, you know, the v-bottom and the v-correction we're all used to see wearing we bounce right back, i don't think we're going to get. that i think you have a real opportunity to buy on the way up as opposed to chasing a rally. this is a little different this time. liz: which is what

jeff flock is standing at the cme. i see behind you, but more on what's really driving crude's gain. >> reporter: yeah. we just finished trading here in the european interest rate options and normally that's a big day because of the lead-up to the fed, but oil overshadowed everything. we at one point got as high as 32.41, closing down about a dollar from that but still well up over 3%. more chatter today from the middle east than ever before, starting with iran. the oil to minister from iran saying that he thinks there is flexibility on the part of opec and russia to cut production instead of produce wildly as they have been. in addition to that, look at other things. opec itself saying it will cooperate with other non-opec members if they can get a deal somehow, and there was news from china; their oil imports in december up 9.3%. yes, a lot of that went into the strategic reserve in china, but still china buying oil. so a lot of bull, bullish news today for oil to, and that's, you know, that's why we've gone up so mu

jeff flock at the cme looking at how low can we go. jeff? >> reporter: i am not as negative and some of these traders not as negative as you suggest there. i want to show you why. first of all, you put up the february contract, wti. right now i've got to strain my eyes to see it, but it's down about 29 cents if i look up on the board there below, you know, below $30. but that expires tomorrow. so that's, essentially, the spot price for oil. if you look to the futures, put up the march, because that's trading about $1 and change to the premium to the february contract which means the bet is we're betting positive. that right now is trading at 30.25, it's down about 14 cents, but it's above $30. so i think that's a positive. the other positive, of course, is brent. today it was up as much as 3% mainly on the china news, and that's still trading pretty positively. so i think there's more positive out there than we've had in several days. and, of course, the other positive for the folks at the gas station, and i'm thankful today to be inside the

jeff flock with me now from the cme. so, jeff, china is the world's second biggest oil consumer. so how much is that dictating sentiment? >> yeah, walking around these pits on the floor of the cme today, you really did feel that and particularly in the oil because as you point out, this is -- these are the guys that consume most of the oil and, you know, certainly they're going to continue to consume oil but the fear is that, you know, it reduces. and i'll tell you. the early bets 32.10 is how low we got today and if it recovered another dollar, it would have been really ugly. deirdre: 32.10, what does this do to gasoline prices, jeff? >> well, i guess that's the silver lining. we are now at about a dollar 99, and we have been there for a while. even if you go back a year, we were at 2.19. consumers have really gotten a real kick in the pocketbook. a good kick in the pocketbook on this and if we go even lower, you know, the last time oil got this low -- the way people are betting around $15, $20 was 1946. deirdre: all right. that's a big contextual point for us. jeff flock thank
