our eyewitness news reporter has been pushing cmpd for >> reporter: we reached out to cmpd regarding johnson's and their investigation. while they confirmed he was a dispatcher in the past but they didn't give us more information. as far as we know no arrests have been made. johnson was found suffering from gunshot wounds in the 4900 block of central avenue in east charlotte saturday morning just before 11:00. he was pronounced dead at the scene. neighbors who live near the crime scene told me they heard gunfire much earlier actually around 2:00 saturday morning. johnson lived in the neighborhood near where his body was found and according to his facebook page, he worked for cmpd from 2003 to 2010 and most recently worked in security at the government center. we reached out to his current employer but have not heard back. i spoke with friends of johnsons all devastated by his death and completely shocked. they told me he often walked around the neighborhood and was a night owl but never looked for trouble. friend and popular in the community. everyone wants answers in the shocking de

we asked him about his vision for cmpd. but on the morning of our meeting, the chief was also dealing with the release of a video showing several of his officers subduing a suspect in a hit and run accident. officers say the subject resisted arrest, and one officer is seen repeatedly landing blows to the suspect's back. the goal was to get the suspect to release his arms so officers could cuff him. as you might imagine, there were those who called the officer's actions excessive. cmpd immediately began an investigation. from the outset, chief were transparent about the events and the officer's tactics in getting a suspect to comply with arrest. putney says the use of force did not rise to a criminal level, but that his department would see if there had been any policy policing is a tough business, and most officers handle the job very well. but we have seen others who cross the line into police brutality. however this particular incident turns out, we count on the chief to police his department as vigorously as his officers

eyewitness news reporter is at cmpd headquarters with new information on the victims. elsa. >> reporter: blake, police are still searching for suspects in both of today's shootings. as they continue their investigations into the city's spoke with say this violence has to stop. >> just before 11:00 saturday morning, charlotte mecklenburg police were calledded to east charlotte where they found jeffrey johnson with multiple gun shot wounds. he was pronounced dead at the scene. it happened just yards from a busy area full of restaurants and people going about their day. concerned about the nearby violence. >> my niece, i have her all the time. and i usedded to be out here in the streetings. >> just hours later, before 2:00 in the afternoon, another deadly shooting in west charlotte. 27-year-old davis was also pronounced dead at the scene. for hours, cmpd collected evidence as people close to davis rushed to the area devastated by his death. the west charlotte shooting happened right next to a ymca where families were coming and going all day. >> i was just going into the

pamela escobar is live at cmpd headquarters tonight with the recent incidents this week. it may feel like crime is getting worse. >> well, paul, i received new numbers from cmpd today. now, while this week is a violent week compared to this time last year overall assaults with a deadly weapon decreased by 6.2% involving guns. homicides are down. chief kerr putney asked council to pay for 125 new officers and 80 staff to deal with the growth in crime. councilwoman leads the community safety committee and said the model has been successful but they need more officers to build relationships in neighborhoods so they can be aware of it and work with the neighbors to find out where it's coming from. >> i think the prospects of them getting some of what they are asking for are good because we have identified this as the most important priority of the council. having said that the process is to turnover every stone and i know it's incredible that we don't have the money to pay for staff which is about $19 million. >> the budget process has to be complete by june. at that point, t
