twitter ceo will be on cnbc squawk alley today. it's a first on cnbc interview at 11:00 a.m.e. we want to hear what the ceo has to say about the future growth strategy. now another big topic of discussion the fed is due to finish it's two day meeting ahead of the policy statement tonight amid a slu of weak first quarter data. they'll be look out for any indication on the timing of a rate hike. steve brings us the latest survey on the economy. >> the u.s. economy has been buffeted by a bunch of trouble in the past couple of months and that created a weak first quarter outlook here but the cnbc fed survey showed that respondents, including economists, analysts and fund managers think the economy is going to plow through these problems. 66% say what we're going through is a temporary slow down. 32% say it's a combination of temporary and permanent factors. only 3% say it's a sign of a for perm nanlt permanent weakening in the economy. growth is pretty much the same as it was in the march survey. 2.7%. a touch higher for this year and 2.8%. just a touch lower for next year. part

that's a cnbc news update for this hour.ey reagan thank you very much. let's go down to the oil close. jackie deangelis, some iran news and speculation this morning. sort of sending the oil markets into a bit of a frenzy a couple of hours ago. >> yeah, it did, brian. initially we had some reports out that a u.s. ship was seized by the iranians. it was an erroneous report. we did see prices calm down a little bit. but we are going to close slightly higher here. about $57 or a little over that. traders telling me they're pretty tentative right now, looking at inventory numbers expected from the e.i.a. tomorrow. but more important than that they'll be digging into the report for production numbers. the key is if we're going to see a third straight week of declines in u.s. production. of course geopolitics still in focus, an eye on yemen as well and the dollar's taking a little bit of a breather so this is somewhat supportive for crude prices. in terms of level, 60 to the up side 55 to the down side we're really just stuck right

however, cnbc aka, mr.sman, has discovered a long standing problem. >> there's a problem in the data that we found with one particular quarter that we thought only concerned the past five years or the past several years but then we do z aid a detailed investigation and it goes back 30 years. a substantial and persistent problem in reporting first quarter gdp data. it averages 2.7% overall in the time period. in the first quarter is only averages 1.87%. several economists we contacted said that difference is statistically difference. it accounts for six of the ten worst quarters since 1985. moving on, the next one, since 2010 this average looks like europe than it does like the u.s. overall it's averaged 2.3%. finally wall street doesn't seem to know it. it overestimates 80% of the time first quarter growth. take a look here you can see this very simply. what we lose in the first quarter being well below average is picked up but not all of it in the second quarter. we can't tell if growth overall is underrep

cnbc will carry a live feed of the event. more about today's trading action let's pring in the managing director at bk asset management. of course the bird fight continues between the hawks and the doves. who do you think is going to win this time around? >> i think the doves still win at this point. the doves are in control because janet yellen is the primary dove that controls the action and i think as i have been saying for awhile it's not necessarily just the fact hah the u.s. economy is doing well it needs to be improving in order for the doves to become completely convinced that they're ready to raise rates so delta is as important as the direction of the u.s. economy and what you've seen over the last couple of weeks or months is the economy has been declining and accelerating. some of it is weather related and some is geo political related. maybe spring comes back to u.s. economy and only then will the fed begin to consider. i think there's a reasonable chance they go in september but i don't know about june just yet.

so we here at cnbc and the cnbc pro team took a look further than that.aid take a look these stocks that bespoke looks at and we look at the ones with three years' worth of earnings history, they have the beat earnings estimates at least 9 out of the 10 times and have a market value of at least $1 billion. among the highlights for this particular screen we ran, some interesting companies come up. three years' worth of earnings history. mastercard beats earnings estimates 94% of the time over the past four years. and the average move on the heels of earnings is a 3% gain. not bad for mastercard. linkedin averages a 4% after earnings come out over the last three years. and amtrust financial, they do a lot of insurance work. this company has not missed earnings expectations over the last three years and on average it goes up by about 4.5% of the time. interesting moves here to keep an eye on. none of these predict the future still interesting statistically and odds-wise to look at this story. >> when you've finally found a tool to predict the future accurate
