again, that's a cnbc exclusive. that will be a closely watched interview.ilvana, thank you very much. >>> turning our attention to a developing story in the middle east, u.s. and coalition forces responded late yesterday to what american officials now describe as the largest attack to date on merchant vessels by iranian-backed houthis in the red sea. the coalition shot down 21 drones and missiles into an area occupied by proapproximately 50 merchant ships. no injuries or damage was reported. this marks the 26th attack on merchant vessels in the region since november 19th. the iranian-bakcked houthis hav been launched attacks. this comes a day after antony blinken warned there will be consequences if the houthis continue to assault ships. major shipping companies including maersk have die vertzed vessels from the red sea to a much longer route around southern africa. the u.n. security council has schedules a vote on a resolution demanding houthi rebels halt their attacks immediately. we'll have much more later on in the show. >>> turning back to the markets,

cnbc's steve liesman filed this report. >> in contrast to the markets, respondents to the cnbc fed cut survey see fewer cuts starting later in 2024. only in june is there a majority of 70% looking for a rate cut. while future rate cuts are looking at six rate cuts, the expectation is not more than three. they're looking at a reduction of its balance sheet by november. the probability of recession is at 39%. it looks like the 25 respondents on average figure the fed rates will be cut every other meeting. that's in june and again in december. they think it aud auld to be m more progressive. 56% say the cuts are going too late while 44% think it's cutting too early. they'll not risk the gains in inflation by increasing early. the probability of a soft landing is unchanged at 47%. it's fairly typical for this group of fed watchers to be more closely alined with the fed's own outlook than the markets. the question remains of who has it right and how much it matters. by 2025, the market, the survey, and the fed all converge in their outlooks, but it looks like there's going to be some back-a

for that let's bring in cnbc's joumanna bercetche live from london.estors seem to be weighing the state of the economy ahead of that key inflation data that's going to come out later this week. what's driving the markets at the moment? >> yeah, that's right. good morning to you. futures are indicated to open in the red today. a bit of a contrast of the price actually we had yesterday with all of the three majors seeing a positive close by the end of the day. we had the best day for the nasdaq actually since november with the tech-heavy index up more than 2.2% higher yesterday. a big jump in the chip maker nvidia which soared 6% yesterday in trade to a new record high. other shares like apple, amazon, also jumping more than 2%. so quite a good day for the tech industry yesterday. but in terms of data today, we'll be looking out for numbers from the small business optimism index out of mfib as well as the trade balance data for november. but of course as you mentioned the big focus for investors this week is going to be that inflation print which comes

here with us is a cnbc contributor.e the shares are down roughly 5%. home improvement spending slowing. whirlpool cutting costs to urge margin pressures. what is your thought on whirlpool? >> our thought is that it is scoring the bottom for expectations. downgrading the estimates for whirlpool to the tune of 11% since november. also the profitability is in the bottom . revenue has been flat for 10 years. the margins are declining and supply calls are going up. we have a very negative view of whirlpool because we don't see a -- for revenue or profitability growth. >> sometimes, companies in the bottom decile are destined to stay that while -- way for a while. let's move on to diageo. shares down 16% in the past year. who is not drinking? b of a downgraded siding a slow in sales in the u.s. in particular. you say that this is still a buy for you? >> it is. we saw some weakness also in the latin america markets, however, the profitability is in the top decile. it has a net margin of 22%. a very attractive 3% dividend yield
