dos santos at cnn london.m welcome back. you're watching "world business today" on cnn. >>> now, let's have a look at what's going on in europe when it comes to the equity trade. we're about 90 minutes into the trading day and the trading week. as you can see, it's a bit of a downbeat day. largely these markets taking cues from asia where there's a lot of concern about how china will have to revamp its economic policy and change its main export driven economy. a lot of people saying if china's having these troubles, the eurozone really has been having these kind of troubles for quite some time and is in a worst situation to whether this kind of storm. hsbc reporting its earnings here. that's one the reasons the ftse 100 isn't doing quite as badly as the other markets. that one is down to the tune of 0.6%. other markets across the european continent down in excess of 1%. if we hone in on hsbc figures, it reported a net profit of 2011 off some 21.9 billion u.s. dollars. that represents a 59% rise on the previous

[ speaking foreign language ] armed groups fighting against the government say syrian troops are terrorizing residents with sniper and shelling homes. humanitarian groups and aid workers say the situation is getting worse. at the moment, cnn has no reporters and no cameras inside syria. the government strictly limits access right there. but i want to show you one way we are able to bring you images of the fighting. freelance film makers, sometimes amateurs with video kamras, release their material for the world to see. this was recorded in homs by a very brave french film maker. he name is manny. this is "world business today" live on cnn. welcome back. >>> some of the world's biggest economic powers have finally found a policy that they will agree on, and that is stopping europe's aviation carbon emissions plan. now, the eu is taxing airlines that use european airports for the carbon pumped into the atmosphere. when i say their flights, it's their flights from the takeoff airport to destination including not only european aerospace, but all the aerospace in between the place where they took off and where they enter european aerospace. if you're flying from japan, this will be all the flight over siberia as well as the flight into the european airport. on wednesday, more than 25 countries vowed to do whatever it takes to defeat that tax. after talks in moscow, russia, india, the united states and china all agreed on a basket of countermeasures. they will do everything they can to cancel or post post the eu's tax. russia has already said it may limit european airlines flights over siberia. other countries might ban their
