cnn's abby phillip traveling with the president. she joins us live from limerick in ireland, with the very latest on this, abby. what have you heard about the negotiations? >> reporter: well, john, president trump is expected to head back this morning for the united states, where he's going to face potentially a revolt among republicans over his stance on tariffs. according to white house officials, the talks have been ongoing for the last two days and they have been positive, characterized by both sides as positive, but there has been no breakthrough yet, and most officials believe that the first round of tariffs expected to go into place monday will go into place because they won't be able to get anything nailed down by today, which is really the deadline for president trump to sign the order in order for those to go into effect. but president trump is defiant this morning. he's telling republicans that they really should love what he's doing with tariffs. >> tariffs are a beautiful thing. it's a beautiful word, if you know how to

here's what cnn's k file dug up. of those so-called people labeled as a liberal on civil rights but oppose busing and i support the effort to curtail the ability of courts to bus. >> joining us now, cnn's k files senior editor, andrew kosinski. andrew, that was, again, in 1981. what was the context in which biden made those comments? >> so biden made these comments july 1981. what had been going on was there was basically this amendment that some senators were trying to add to a bill to make it to -- so courts could not order busing so the justice department could not. and biden was very supportive of that effort. so he came on this program we had called "newsmakers" that we found in the archive. he sort of explained his position at length which was he, you know, as we just heard, he's a liberal on civil rights but opposed busing as a way to desegregate schools. and he had a long history on this. in the 1970s, he had these legislative efforts that pretty -- that mostly failed where he worked with some segregationists

let's bring in cnn's david mackenzie. these military groups trying to demand that power be turned over to civilians. what are we seeing at this point? >> well, this is an early morning raid, it appears, by the transitional military council, some aspects of the security forces. there have been protesters sitting in or camping out at the ministry of defense for quite some time now. they had been warned by the transitional military council that it was a "danger to the people to be there," but though they had promised not to have this violent crackdown on the protesters, it seems they moved in. the british ambassador recently tweeting that he was very extremely concerned by the heavy gunfire that he had been hearing from even his residence. now, you saw those social media and other videos circulating of the protesters running away in panic. it appears at this stage that live ammunition could have been used on two groups, both the group -- the umbrella group and the doctors saying there are severe injuries and deaths in this c

let's bring in cnn's miguel marquez. what more are we learning about the suspect and the possible motives and what's happening there now? >> what may be absolutely disturbing about this, fredericka, is that this person that everyone at cnn has talked to and everyone that i've seen in other are reports saying he was a friendly guy, a quiet guy, an okay guy and then this. you talked about the resignation earlier in the day. his immediate supervisor is one that was killed. it's not clear if he targeted that individual. police have spoken about how all of this played out. do i want to show you exactly where we are right now. this is the police station on the other side basically of where all of this took place. this is the official memorial here that is being set up. police pointing out that their officers moved from this area towards that building up into it and engaged him. the chief of police giving us more details about how that long gun battle took place. >> five to eight minutes after these officers began to enter the

cnn's miguel marques is with me as well. the suspected shooter, as we know, is dead. 12 people were killed, 11 of them fellow employees in the building. bits and pieces about the gunman are coming out. there was talk had he been fired. he was not fired, we know that? >> reporter: officials have come out and said absolutely he was not fired. that information that has been out there and we heard that he was disgruntled but not fired. there was a conversation that he had with a colleague in the restroom before all of this took place. the colleague saying it was a perfectly normal conversation. he was brushing his teeth. he went to the restroom. as they were washing up and finishing, asked him what he was doing for the weekend. he said, not much. wished him a good day, he said the same, and that was the end of it. everything seemed perfectly normal. according to this individual, that was minutes before the shooter then presumably, possibly went to his car, which we may have seen taken from this scene just a short time ago, and t
