cnn's dr. gupta looks at why that has happened. >> we're going to need millions and millions and millions of tests. >> problem is, more than a month after the first patient was diagnosed in the united states, we still don't have nearly enough tests. according to our review of cdc reports, only around 1500 people have been tested. total. it's a big different from other countries like south korea, where nearly 160,000 people have been tested. even in the drive-through. and in the uk, more than 20,000 people. it's basically surveillance. and in the united states, that lack of testing has led to a lack of planning. >> it's very important that there's an aggressive approach in the beginning. that you look for all of those cases and because as case numbers increase, it will become overwhelmed. as much can be done in the early stages of this, the better chance you have to delay and reduce and suppress transmission. >> the test itself is one similar for one done from the flu. a swab from the nose or th

you are live in the "cnn newsroom." i'm ana cabrera in new york. and the number of people in the united states testing positive for the potentially deadly coronavirus has now topped 500. it's a big jump from just 24 hours ago. and now, 33 states are reporting patients either being treated or under quarantine. the vast majority of these cases are concentrated in the seattle, washington, area, as well as a cluster of infections outside of new york city. nationwide, more than 20 people have died from the outbreak. the u.s. surgeon general telling cnn today that americans should be prepared for that infection rate and the death toll to also rise. a crowded cruise ship with 3,500 people on board is now headed to a port in the california bay area. 21 people have tested positive for the virus on board that ship. u.s. officials say they are ready to handle these people on the ship who may need help. >> i recommended very strongly in our meetings that we get those people off that ship. we don't want to have a repeat of what we saw at the "diamond pribs yepr

cnn's dr.anjay gupta explains why. >> young people can be a risk to people with these pre-existing conditions. and even if there's higher populations of elderly people in some of these states, there are still elderly people in all these states and people with these pre-existing conditions in all these states. that's the one thing i think we're going to keep coming back to is that it has sort of felt like a patchwork thus far. one state handling it one way, another state another way. and i kept thinking that the federal government would come out with recommendations, which they have. but then still allowing some of these other states to follow their own recommendations. alabama, for example, saying 25 people or more. it's not so much the number of people, jake, to be clear. those are arbitrary numbers. but i do think there needs to be national guidelines on this that everyone should abide by. >> and dr. gupta will answer more of your questions at a third cnn global town hall. coronavirus, facts

cnn white house reporter sarah westwood is in palm beach, florida. there seems to be confusion over the mixed messaging from the white house and ability of these tests. we heard about a million testing kits would be available by the end of the week. it's now past the end of the week. what do we know? >> amber and christine, we have seen mixed signals out of the white house about the availability of coronavirus testing kits. otherwise the white house has been attempting to streamline its message after a few weeks of mismessaging coming from this administration about covid-19. we saw vice president pence taking a more measured tone when he talks about the availability of tests, setting realistic expectations about shortages the white house might face in the future. but president trump was painting a much rosier picture about the test. he visited the cdc in atlanta yesterday, a trip taken off his schedule and added back in the same day. here's what he had to say about the availability of tests. >> i think importantly anybody right now and yesterday, any

cnn's dr. sanjay gupta joins us now. sanjay, an internal memo from a hospital system has been getting a lot of attention, detailing how they're preparing protocols for life and death decisions that might have to be made during an emergency, who gets a ventilator, who does not, how long does somebody get to stay on a ventilator. part of the letter, to quote from it, quote, some patients will be very sick and unlikely to survive their illness. even with critical equipment, treating them would take away resources from patients who might survive. the henry ford system says none of their hospitals are not anywhere near having to enact such protocols. none of them are at capacity with coronavirus patients. but we've seen what happened in italy, and we're tracking, the u.s. has been following italy by ten or 11 days. it could happen. we need to be honest about that. >> yeah, look, i think we do have to be honest about that. i can tell you, jake, first of all, michigan is my home state, i know many of the doctors there, i've bee

cnn's dr. sanjay gupta gets a look at one facility at the epicenter of the state's outbreak. >> i am concerned. when we use the word "pandemic," i think it tells us all it's very serious. >> she manages a hospital. she gave us a look at the hospital which is now at the center of one of the country's largest outbreaks. on march 2nd, a case appears in westchester, new york. a man was tested posted and then his wife and so was his neighbor. by march 6th, new rochelle received its first patient. not even a week later there are at least 148 positive patients in the county. >> if you look at the curves, they're like this and then like this. that's what you're preparing for here? >> yes. >> your icu is full. >> it snies how are you going to handle this part of things. >> we have plans to transferring patients to different places if we need to, plans to set up different areas of the hospital if we have to do that. it's a matter of keeping an eye on the situation all day every day and being ready to pus

cnn's senior medical correspondent elizabeth cohen joining us now from cnn headquarters in atlanta. confusion because there's been disagreement about whether labs could test for this, that could test for it but that weren't certified to test for it. so, in a nutshell, this "the new york times" reporting saying that this lab in seattle that tests for the flu all the time, that's what they do. they wanted to test for coronavirus, but federal authorities here in the united states said, nope, you're not certified today do that, so you can't do that. and actually, they pretty much defied what the government said and did go out and do some testing for coronavirus, and they found out that there was a young man, a high school student, who was positive, and they kept him from spending the day at school and contaminating his classmates and teachers, so they really, you know, did a great thing there, and the government still said, no, you're not supposed to be testing for this. eventually, the government relented. they found the -- the seattle doctors found that they were finding more and more
