tom foreman, cnn, washington. >> general wesley clark is a cnn military analyst and former nato supreme allied commander. he's with us this hour from boulder, colorado. general, thank you for being with us. so before this invasion began, there were some estimates out there that russia's military could be done with all of this, could sweep through ukraine maybe in a couple of weeks. but now we're a week in, and they've taken just one major city. clearly this is not playing out as putin had planned. what are the problems here? what does he do next? >> yeah. well, the military may have planned -- the russian military may have planned to come in there and finish it in a week or two, but they didn't count on the warm weather north of kyiv. that land up there is not frozen, and so the russians have been road bound. this was their main objective. they wanted to sweep into kyiv, take it, and install a puppet government, and they just haven't been able to get there. they've also discovered that the ukrainians are pretty good fighters. they're, in fact, brilliant against an overwhelming force. an

i'm at cnn's world headquarters in atlanta. just hours ago, another loud explosion was heard near the ukrainian capital, another sign perhaps russia is moving into a more brutal military campaign, escalating attacks on major cities and seven days on what was predicted to be an overwhelming military offensive sweeping across all ukraine within weeks, only now are russian forces in control of a major ukrainian city in the south. fierce fighting left dozens da dead. no word so far on casualties. putin's war of choice has seen some serious setbacks as well. the military convoy which had been advancing on kyiv appears to have stalled, possibly out of fuel. the ukrainian president claims some occupiers are fleeing back to russia and he praised the courage of his fellow ukrainians. >> translator: our military, our border guards, our territorial defense, even ordinary farmers capture the russian military every day. all the captives say only one thing. they do not know why they are here despite the fact that there are dozens of times mo

you are watching cnn. what has been happening across ukraine in the last 24 hours. the russian military is keeping up the pressure on ukrainian cities that have been largely spared until recently. this is video from the central city of dnipro a short time ago. a cnn crew felt at least two outgoing explosions and saw smoke in the sky, which appeared to be remnants of anti-aircraft fire. dnipro had not seen any attacks until friday, when russia expanded its offensive into parts of central and even western ukraine. one russian aircraft also hit an airport in the city of lutsk, you causing this massive fireball. ukrainian officials say at least two people were killed and the airport is -- is only about 110 kilometers from the polish border. we now want to follow up on a story we told you about yesterday. this week, a cnn crew joined a nato surveillance plane flying over eastern europe, and monitoring russia's military moves in ukraine. the plane saw fighter jets flying in from belarus, and now we can show you

phil black, cnn, lviv, ukraine. >> so much misery and pain. the united nations says russia's war on ukraine has driven nearly 3.5 million people out of the country. take a look at the map. the vast majority are heading west to neighboring countries and if you include those who are displaced internally but still in ukraine, the number jumps to at least 10 million people driven from their homes. that is almost, to put it in perspective, a quarter of ukraine's population now forced from their homes. the u.n. says more than 90% of the people who fled ukraine are women and children and they are at a, quote, heightened risk of gender-based violence and other forms of exploitation and abuse. poland has registered the highest number of ukrainian refugees so far with more than 2.1 million people crossing as of monday. the u.n. says poland is now one of the largest refugee-hosting countries in the world and it happened almost overnight. many of them are continuing their journey to other european countries. cnn's ed lavandera shows us one polish couple o

>> announcer: this is cnn breaking news. >>> hello, everyone. i'm michael holmes coming to you live from lviv in ukraine, and we begin with this news just in to us. the humanitarian corridor from the northeastern city of sumy will continue on wednesday. that's according to the regional governor there. it is the same corridor that was opened on tuesday, one of five proposed by the russians thus far, but the only one agreed upon by ukraine. now, we are just about an hour away from that proposed russian cease-fire for five cities and a chance for civilians to leave. on tuesday, ukraine says russia hit sumy with air strikes before tuesday's cease-fire took effect, killing 21 people, including 2 children. the government in kyiv says about 5,000 people did manage to make it out of sumy during the eventual pause in fighting. no evacuation, though, from the southern port city of mariupol. instead ukraine claiming russian forces fired on a convoy. the city has been without water and electricity for days, and a u.s. official calling it isolated. meanwhile
