let's get to jennifer gray at the cnn weather center. how brutal is this storm going to be, jennifer? >> reporter: this is going to be a big one. if you don't get the snow, you'll get the cold. it is going to be very, very cold. blizzard conditions across the portions of the northern plains as well as the upper midwest. this is basically just getting going. you can see the snowfall through montana, north dakota. this is going to intensify throughout the day. that's why we have all of these watches and warnings and blizzard warnings in effect for portions of minnesota. look at the preliminary snowfall totals. we've had more than 20 inches of snow across washington. the pass had 15 inches of snow. it was a big snow producer. michigan, we could pick up 12 to 18 inches of snow across the u.p. of michigan. a lot of flight cancellations we'll see. chicago will be a hard-hit area where we could see major cancellations. along with the snow, we'll see 50-mile-per-hour winds across the midwest and the very cold temperatures are going to settle in.

you're watching cnn newsroom. in ukraine, the presidential adviser says that the country's forces have experienced heavy losses in the east. the adviser says that russia has lost more. this comes a day after ukraine's military warned that russia has diverted resources from other areas to the battle for bakhmut. kyiv is described as one of russia's largest missile barrages since the war began more than 10 months ago. the ukrainian defense ministry says that the timing of the missile attack was intentional, but moscow's aim is to force ukrainians to celebrate the new year in the dark and cold. in this latest onslaught, russia appeared to target ukraine's electrical grid, knocking out power in several regions. authorities say that the attacks killed at least three people and wounded seven. the ukrainian military says that shot down 54 of 69 russian missiles along with 16 iranian- made shahed drones. president volodymyr zelensky condemned russia in his address. >> translator: with every rocket attack, russia is gettin

cnn's katelyn to lants is with us. what are they looking for now beyond what they've already received? >> reporter: well, victor and bianna, we are learning basically from new court filings today about these investigative steps that were taken all the way back over the summer and into the fall. what we learned is that the investigators did a bunch of searches on email accounts, specifically the email accounts of three different people who were allied with donald trump right around the election and afterwards, and were really working to try and help him hold onto the presidency. those email accounts, those people were jeffrey clark who was a justice department official, ken clu cow ski who was a deputy of his, and john eastman who was a private attorney for donald trump at the time. that's the emails that they searched and then once the justice system got ahold of those e-mails, they were going through them, and there were specific things they went to court to get access to. the first thing, they were trying to get acce

cnn's ed lavandera in downtown el paso. i wonder, ed, what kind of preparations you're seeing there. >> reporter: well, you know, once again, dozens of migrants sleeping on the streets because the shelters here in this city simply overwhelmed. you can see many of the migrants just buried under blankets because the temperatures here have been so painfully frigid at night, into the lower 30s over the course of the last week. a bunch of different reasons for why this is happening. shelter space is very limited but there are also a number of migrants who are traveling in family groups and they get released at different points so these areas around bus stations have been kind of like the central gathering points and they don't want to stray too far away from that so they can be reunited as quickly as possible. it is causing a great deal of concern, jim, because the mayor of el paso is saying if title 42 is lifted next wednesday, december 21st, that's the date everybody is looking toward, that right now the number of migrants tha

cnn's omar jimenez is at chicago's o'hair airport, meteorologist jennifer gray is at the cnn weather center. omar, first, i wonder what you are seeing there. are you seeing cancellations in advance of this? >> reporter: so far things have looked pretty good as far as delays, cancellations here. so thankfully nothing there. but the fear is once we get into tomorrow and the day after, as this weather really starts to take grip here, that that could be the reality for a lot of these passengers and it's gwhy lot of the folks we have been talking to today are people who have moved up their flights to try to get ahead of some of those winter-like conditions. for example, here at o'hair tomorrow is expected to be the busiest day o'hair anticipates over the course of this christmas holiday travel period and it's why -- it's also coincidentally the time when some of these winter conditions are coming in. we talked to a passenger a little earlier and he told us why he switched his travel. >> we were actually supposed to fly out to orlando tomorrow, looking for the sun. then our agent he called
