let's go now to cnn meteorologist allison chinchar.sually after major earthquakes like this, we hear about aftershocks. what do you know about aftershocks there and are we seeing those? >> yeah, we are. and it is the one of the most common things people think about afterwards. the initial quake was a magnitude 6.8, depth was about 11 miles into the surface. that seems pretty deep, but for geological purposes that's considered extremely shallow. you see southwest of marrakech. just 19 minutes after the initial quake there was an aftershock of 4.9. that doesn't sound like it could cause damage, but you have to understand, after the initial shock of 6.8, all of the structures have been damaged. there was likely subsequent damage done 19 minutes later after the initial quake it was felt as far away as algeria and portugal, the neighboring countries there. very few earthquakes of 5.0 or larger have actually occurred in the area so that just goes to show you how rare it is. we've had that one rather large aftershock. we do anticipate more af

cnn medical correspondent meg tyrell is joining us right now. reporter: the numbers are striking, when you look at them, they are up among adults, three times higher than they were three months ago but among kids they've risen five times since that trough three months ago, it's important really to put this into context, this rise is off the lowest level that we've seen for hospitalizations with covid since they started measuring this at the beginning of the pandemic, but it is rising to levels that doctors are starting to become concerned about this, really overall. and if you look at where geographically hospitalizations are highest, it's really concentrated in areas in the south, particularly see the yellow there that's showing higher levels and the orange higher than that, concentrated in states like florida. one concerning trend among the kids data we're seeing from the american academy of pediatrics is that really we're seeing pronounced rises in kids under the age of 4, we're seeing that they are a quarter of kids in the country, but more

let's bring in cnn's kara spinel. refutes what happened on capitol hill? >> gary shapley, the irs whistle-blower testified before lawmakers saying that u.s. attorney david weiss who oversees the hunter biden investigation said in october 2022 meeting among law enforcement officials that he didn't have the decisionmaking authority over whether to bring a case and that he as asked for and was denied special counsel status. now we're learning through transcripts of interviews that my colleagues annie grayer and jeremy read through that three top officials including the head of the fbi office overseeing this investigation, his deputy and gary shapley's former supervisor all provided testimony that is casting doubt on that. they're saying specific to shapely saying that he didn't have decisionmaking authority. saying if my recollection if he would have said that i would have remembered. shapely's lawyers have said unlike those officials, shapely has taken notes during the meeting he's provided the handwritten notes and he

with us now cnn's paula reid who has been following all this.la, what are we going to see in just a few hours? >> reporter: well, it's significant. we're going to be able to see this entire hearing, and while it's about scheduling and logistics, not necessarily the most exciting topics, here in this case they take on a true significance because we know that the central tension in all of the trump-related criminal cases is timing. he wants to try to push all of these cases back until after the 2024 election, but prosecutors are keen to move these things along as quickly as possible. now, today they're focused not only on scheduling but also the possibility of breaking this case up into smaller cases. they've asked the district attorney to come with a good faith estimate of just how long it's going to take for her to put on a trial with 19 defendants. already several people charged in this case have asked to separate or sever their case from the rest of the group in hopes of getting a faster trial. the district attorney insists she wants to try ev
