i'm don lemon, you're in the "cnn newsroom." it is 6:00 sunday morning in the philippines. sunrise breaking on a national tragedy, and i'm talking about the utter devastation caused by an enormous pacific typhoon. the storm smashed into the philippine islands with a fury tearing roofs from buildings, ripping trees from the ground and cutting off hundreds of thousands of people from communications and any ability to move to safety. the people of the philippines are not only dealing with the cleanup and repair but the human cost is immense. early estimates put the death toll at more than 1,200 people and that's just in two coastal provinces. that number will likely rise considerably as casualty reports come in from rural areas. about 350,000 people are without homes today because of that storm. >>> and we have some remarkable images that we want to share with you, they are emerging from the philippines, many from right in the heart of the destruction. storm chaser james reynolds tried to bring people to safety in the hard-hit coastal city of tachlabahn. >> over here. >> okay.

time to get you back into the "cnn newsroom" with martin savidge. >>> you're in the "cnn newsro " newsroom," i'm martin savidge. it is great to be with you. it is just after 10:00 p.m. in geneva, switzerland, and right now diplomats are still trying to persuade iran to stop working on a nuclear program. we've just heard from people that were traveling with secretary of state john kerry who say that a deal is very close, but the chances for an agreement this weekend are unclear. let's get to geneva right now and talk to jim, and john kerry wrapped up a meeting with iran and eu officials. any indication the meeting was productive? >> reporter: it's the second today. they're getting down to the specific wording of this proposed interim agreement, even down to individual words and individual words can have enormous meaning for both sides. one of the key issues, consistent issue, is iran's right to enrich uranium, iran wants an explicit right to the advice. they don't believe that any country has an explicit right to enrich uranium, how they square that circle, that one-word right is the kind o

welcome to the cnn newsroom where we are watching severe storms threatening one third of the nation. that is more than 120 million people in 126 states. a dangerous tornado is ripping through illinois and major cities are in the strike zone. we have correspondents on the ground. let's start with you karen, what is the latest on the information that you are get sng. >> as you mentioned, this is an extremely situation it affects millions of people. tornado watches are extending down toward mississipouri. these are the areas that have erupted. the most recent one was a report coming out of illinois. they had reports of structural damage there and minor injuries. earlier in the day, 11:55 local time we had damage recorded in pecan, illinois. the reruption of these tornados is still owe curing as we go throughout the afternoon hours. we are looking at illinois now. chicago is way up here. to the south of chicago we are looking at a tornado warning. a dangerous situation which is across this region. here is interstate 57, much of these storms or many of these storms are moving towards the
