we will see another day x of excessive heat warnings in pink for inland areas. a little good news along the bay shore. you're downgraded from excessive heat warning. now the heat advisory in the reason behind that is you'll avoid the triple digits right alongside the bay shoreline that these areas like oakland 80's to 90's. that's obviously still hot, but it's not triple digits. coastal areas out of advisories in general. you'll fall into the 60's and 70's a whole lot more comfortable podcast doesn't show any fog, but we will have a sea breeze today. this helps us out along the coast along the bayshore keeps us out of the triple digits inland areas. you're still right there in those 3 digit numbers. all the details on just how hot it will get right where you're at. still to come right it's definitely a better morning than it would have if they didn't resolve some of the issues they were able to get that rain between pleasant hill bar where i'm at all concord. they're able to get that single tracking system up and running because last night it was not up and running will transfer shut down. you have to take a bus. and so they were able to get it going for this morning's commute. take a look at video. it's video of the derailment that happened just a few short months ago. and that is what we're trying to avoid by making sure our takes all the precautions. and that is whether that means delaying trains, slowing them down, doing single tracking systems, taking a longer time to fix problems, which is what they're doing right now. they're being extra careful because it's been nonstop with the heat 100 degrees day in day out. even right 6 o'clock in the morning. it's in the 70's, the high 70's. and so there was yesterday some major issues with the tracks. they had to stop the trains between pleasant hill and concord due to an equipment problem on the track. so buses were provided. bart says equipment did overheat along the track so they couldn't get a single tracks going until this morning. crews took advantage of the somewhat cooler temperatures overnight to correct alignment and they're still working on that. there's a crews are still on the tracks. >> and working on a small deviation that was in the track. so keep in mind, if you're riding board this morning, you're going to want to pack the patience. they also just put out passengers on the plane line will can expect up to 15 minute delays in the sfo directions. and if you're at the concord pleasant hill stations, they're going to also see some delays. a look at the schedule and it looked a bit longer than normal. some saying 15 minutes until the train arrives. some saying 30 minutes until the next train arrived. i talked to a man who's right in this morning. he said yesterday was brutal. the train was hot. >> and it took extra long to get to his work. so we'll hear from him in the next half hour for now. send it back to you james. >> okay. thank you very much, sara. and the heat also affecting vta service in santa clara county about 40 vta buses were pulled off the routes yesterday because of heat related mechanical issues. and that means you can see stranded commuters. make up those bus about 10% of the normal weekday schedule. so there was a delay and inconvenience and vta is warning customers check the route information because similar things could happen today. we don't know yet. we'll keep our eye on. 605, right now. let's take a look at the power outage situation. we've got pg and e's power outage map right now. you can tell just by glancing. >> that the vast majority of outages are in the south bay right now. you can see all the different areas in different colors, green being the least impacted anywhere from 0 to 50 customers. but as we scroll around, you'll see that there are areas of orange and that's where we have anywhere from 505,000 customers without power in these particular neighborhoods. no estimated time of restoration just yet. we'll keep you updated right here on the kron. 4 morning news and throughout the day on our website, kron 4 dot com power outages also sprawling across to the east bay last night, pockets of lafayette were left in the dark for several hours. >> and the first time this week that they had a blackout there, one was on sunday. they had to blackouts on monday and adding to all of that, the outages lasted for hours. one man we talked to says that he's lived in this area for 40 years and he's never seen blackouts this frequently. the basic question was. why is my street suffering power outages? 3 4 times in the last 3 days. >> and we've checked with neighbors in orinda, rog and so forth. they've not experience the same thing that really caught our part because out so temperatures in the house close to 85. 0, man. it's so frustrating, right when they describe like, ok, their house has no power. and it's 85 and somebody maybe one block away. >> they're fine. and they're expected triple digits again today in lafayette. so they're really hoping that they don't have any power shut off today. we are under a flex alert. that's what's happening today. the statewide flex alert issued again because this is just so hot and at the such a strain on the grid is the 8th straight day at cal iso anticipating some relief today as temperatures come down a little bit. so they don't think >> stress of the great is going to be as strong as it was yesterday. but again, that flex alert is in effect from 04:00pm to 09:00pm in the fall. if we all do our and reduce use of any sort of large appliances during that window. we hope any blackout and you are doing a great job. i said everybody, including you, james. i mean, people are keeping their houses at 79 degrees what we can now speaking of load on the grid, peak electricity demand did hit 52,000 megawatts overnight. that is a new all time record. the old record was set back in july 2006. and that's when demand exceeded 50,000 megawatts. they were worried that we would do that yesterday. we did. luckily it didn't bring the grid down. thankfully, we did learn some lessons from previous blackouts, which did lead to power companies and customers being notified. you may have seen a text message yesterday saying, hey, the grid is real close to collapsing. shut down. anything that you can right now and a lot of people got those messages and did i did? yeah, i did it. an engineering professor from san jose state university, though, says that the state's energy problems are the result of a bigger issue. more needs to be changed. it's climate change. we have to be serious about climate change because >> one of the sources of the power that we have it as a backup is coming from the for the hydro pilot, which is basically using the water, the noel with the heat. lot of those rivers and lakes are vape or eat it. so so this is a problem. so we have to look at it as the big picture here what is causing this weather and how can we had to close to reactive? >> yeah, the professor says that some simple called first conservation efforts do work. he you should do things like. turning your thermostat to 78 degrees and keeping it there. don't use dishwashers or ovens during those flex alert periods and the turn off any unnecessary lights, all those little things help the less power use. the more there is to go around to people who really need it. >> and we can't say it enough that, you know, you need to conserve or else we're risking outages. some of california's top energy officials doing just that, saying it again and again pleading with the public. they do not want to have rolling blackouts and that would be the worst case scenario. the governor expanded his emergency declaration yesterday and that frees up resources so the state can easily respond to the dangerous conditions. energy officials say saving a little goes a long way. >> most important message right now for anybody that would, you know, you're my voice or see this interview really is conservation little things that they can do. all of that will make a big difference in helping with our electricity supplies. >> some republicans have criticized newsom's administration saying they're focused on shifting to renewables too much instead of investing in the power grid. >> well, happening today, the dublin unified school district is going to be. adjusting some things to try to keep students and teachers cool and safe as this heat wave continues. yeah. they've decided they're going to go to half-days. let's go certain that the lights will continue to be up and that's why they notified the parents yesterday afternoon. go ahead and pick up your kids today early tomorrow and friday because for the rest of the week, it will be half days because they just don't want the kids to be inside when the ac possibly goes out. so what's going to happen is usually they're out of school by 3.10. it's going to happen now around 12, 30, every day during this heat wave. but it's not just the stress on the grid is also a stress on the parents because they have to scramble to come to this location to pick up the kids yesterday, there was not a heads up. they just got a text and they all came down here to pick up their kids. they decided this don't catch the parents off guard. so just go ahead and notify them early enough so they can prepare. take a look at your screen. some of the other things that they're doing also includes once you're inside the classrooms, they will not be out for recess for that early and for the younger kids because no physical activities outside. they went ahead and canceled the games moving forward, at least for this particular week. and they're encouraging people to practice before or before school or after 7 o'clock at night when it's a little bit cooler school should start guys in about 90 minutes 90 minutes from now. and i'll talk to parents to get their reaction. what this (gasping) ♪ >> 6.15, and the one spare the air alert in effect in the bay area. so it's not just hot air. it's smoggy air. and that is because of the hot air inland areas in parts of the south bay have unhealthy conditions for sensitive groups. so that means anybody who's really young, really old, you have respiratory problems like asthma. you got to be extra careful. don't go out in this. maybe if you have an air cleaner, you know, appear for now get those got going in the car to. we've got john standing by with a closer look at the air quality. our temperatures. >> and all of that. good morning, john added to the list eriz and stay on the couch still in the midst of the heat, still in the midst of the bad air quality. >> 2 things that we hadn't seen much of an issue with at least up to this point for the bay area. this week, we've changed all the factors, though. heat gripping areas all the way up to the coastline and their quality. certainly seeing an impact were moderate this morning likely to see some spots descending to poor later on today. as for current conditions, it's brightening up just a little bit. we're in our coolest temperatures of the day right now. enjoy that. we've been seeing historically hot conditions lately, livermore for 2 days in a row. you've got up 216 degrees, which is our hottest temperature ever on record for the bay area. also breaking records, not just for daytime highs but highest temperatures ever recorded by city by city. napa. one 15 santa rosa also won 15. the hottest you've ever been in record redwood city at one 10, san jose all the way up to 109. and although just a daytime high record, 81 all the way up to the coast in half moon bay. now today's daytime highs will be a little cooler than yesterday's. and you can actually think a little bit of that sea breeze for that allowing some ocean cool there at the coast in the bay shore, not enough inland to take you out of the triple digits, though. we're still scorching hot inland, but staying below 110 today. so, yes, that's the new threshold. the right? because they have to do some slowing of the trains to make sure take a look. we have video of a derailment. that's what happened just a few months ago during the summer. they're trying to do everything. they're in their power to avoid that from happening again. and derailment happened. you know, when the tracks get hot and then they have issues. and so that's why that is this week when you had flex alert after flex alert heat heat heat. we had to make sure that we take all the precautions possible. so daria, james, it's going to be another morning where there are some delays, but it's going to on the trains. but some people told me that they're just glad they're not driving because they don't pay for gas. some some you lose some you and talk about sacrifice, i guess. thank you very much, sara. and despite the heat and the blackouts, the owners of a bakery in livermore doing everything they can to keep their doors open. it swingin bakery. >> they lost power for hours on monday night coffers. amanda hari has the latest. >> the owners of the bakery tell me this week has been filled with constant anxiety. they say they're worried about losing product. they're worried about losing power and they're worried about their staff safety. we're just really hoping we don't have to close our doors. temperatures rising well over 100 degrees have left many businesses unable to operate. >> on monday, we bakery in livermore was busy all morning for the labor day holiday. shortly after owners, brian amy wing in close the store at 2.30 in the afternoon. they received a message. >> a notification that our security cameras went down. and so we assume the power went out. everything is it based on for space so all of our products we rely on for gration. they say the bakery was without power for 14 hours. >> they decided to bring as many perishables as possible to their home. >> where there was power. but even after that, they couldn't sleep. >> but 3.45? we look at came down here and we bought a generator last year and decided to get that out put it on to the fridges and freezers to save more of our person and a nomination. they're also preparing buckets of ice to put in the refrigerators if they lose power again to try and keep things cool. >> amy says they're going to try and get their baking done early wednesday morning. but even before the temperatures rise. >> well, 6.36 in the east out the lidge is going to be open today after it was closed yesterday because of the scorching heat on tuesday, classes were canceled due to a power outage and the entire campus shut down as high temperatures proved to be too much for the grid by mid-afternoon school officials sent out an alert declaring classes were over 3,000 pg e customers received word of an outage and a spokesperson emphasized the importance that everybody chip in to get through extreme weather like this. >> yeah. conserve conserve conserve. that's the name of the game. it's the 7th straight day that the state has called for a flex alert. this is really the time to buckle down the bay area's been doing really good at conserving its preventing those rotating outages. and it's working because the state not called for. those teaming up to. so we have to keep conserving today between the hours of 04:00pm and 09:00pm. really, it's it's unnecessary appliances. don't run them. could turn up see if you can. every little bit helps. you might be thinking, oh, gosh, have been doing this for several days now. but really, you know, don't let up. let's continue to conserve today to help out the state. >> but again, mount diablo college will be back open today. and just a reminder, the statewide flex alert was issued for the 8th consecutive day. so that affects us today all throughout the state, the california independent system operator cal iso is anticipating less strain on the grid because temperatures are going to be down slightly but still going to be hot enough that everybody's going to want to run their a c's. so they've issued this flex alert. it will run once more from 04:00pm until 09:00pm tonight. >> we parks in the east bay are back open. they were closed because the fire risks earlier with the heat wave. the east bay regional park district close 40 parks over labor day weekend. that's when he really started in the fire. us were high in concord livermore, everywhere else that had temperatures of over 110 and boy, we going north of there now?
