nbc's kelly cobiella has more tonight from london. >> reporter: far from italy some 60 miles north of the libyan coast rescuers are desperately searching for survivors. a few dozen have been found. but hundreds are still missing. when migrants spotted this cargo ship responding to their distress call late saturday night, survivors say they rushed to one side capsizing their overloaded boat. italian prime minister matteo renzi blames the tragedy on human traffickers saying "we can't let people be at their mercy." italy is struggling to cope with a flood of migrants and war refugees setting off from libya with dozens of rescues last week. many of those migrants are reliving their fears. >> i spent three days in the water before the rescue comes. >> many boats are capsizing because it is overloaded. . >> nbc's kelly cobiella has been following this for us from london. at this point, what more do we know about the suspect and what he was planning? >> reporter: well, as you say, he was planning to attack two churches according to prosecutors, possibly on sunday morning. they say they found a stockpile of loaded guns in his car outside his apartment building along with ammunition a bulletparagraph vest, two bullet proofvests formy, and -- bullet proof vest two bullet proof vests potentially, and recovered phones from his home. they believe he was talking to someone who could have been in syria, but they were very careful to say there was no immediate evidence he had any direct ties to any organized groups outside or inside the country. they also, craig, say they've linked him to the murder of a 32-year-old woman near one of the churches sunday morning. she was found dead in her car from a bullet wound. a security official tells the associated press she appears to have been a random victim. >> was he under surveillance at all? i know there was talk a f

nbc's kelly cobiella from london. you followed the news conference that wrapped up a short time ago. what's the latest? >> reporter: we're learning a little more about this. the man is a 24-year-old i.t. student from syria and, but live -- from algeria but living in france the past several years. prosecutors say he planned to attack two churches last sunday morning. they say they got a call at 8:50 in the morning, a 911 call last sunday from someone who said he'd been hurt in an armed robbery. when they responded, they found the suspect outside his apartment bleeding from the leg. they also say they found a stockpile of weapons in his car including automatic weapons, handgun, ammunition, bullet proof vests, and they say detailed plans to attack two churches. they say the attacks were imminent. the man is under arrest at the hospital. french authority say there was no armed robbery. in fact, the suspect mistakenly shot himself. they also say they recovered phone from his home. they believe he was talking to someone who
