stacey cohan is following the pay freeze, good morning. >> reporter: good morning this is not going to be welcome news to wake up to for many in our area, home to thousands of federal workers yes, indeed the gop pushed through a bill through the house that would extend the pay freeze that has been going on for two years into a third ye this is not without contentious debate but they managed to pass it through by votes over 300 to votes of 117 i believe the break down was. let me break down what this means to you. it would extend the federal pay freeze until 2013, congress would be included, meaning their salary for the rank and file, 174,000 would not increase. it does not apply to folks in the military and republicans say it would save $26 billion, the two year pay freeze is said to have saved already $60 billion, gop lawmakers are pushing farther wanting federal workers to increase their contribution to the pension system all of this stems partly from the payroll tax cut debate on that payroll tax cut which allows average americans to pay slightly less, allows everyone to pay slightl

let's get more on this mornings top story from stacey cohan she is live on capital hill. >> hey, tonye just before an election is not a good idea for anybody, everybody agrees this needs to be done but there has been a lot of arguing about the way in which it is done and how it will be paid for the good news seems there is an agreement now, on extending this payroll tax cut. this has been a battle that has been fought since december you will remember when there was a brief agreement to extend the tax cut, until the end of this month now it appears there is an agreement. i will tell you what will happen if the deal goes through as it is currently written, $20 a week would be the average amount the average worker will get to keep as long as this payroll tax cut stays in place that tax cut is what we pay out to social security this could be sent to the president this week extend that tax break through the end of this year and also it would include an extension of jobless benefits, and medicare reimbursements for doctors they were all bundled in this same measure, still up in the air how

. >> fox 5's stacy cohan is following the developments live on capitol hill this morning.now with the story. >> good morning. this is not welcome news to thousands of people in our area. federal workers are already in their second year without a pay raise and indeed, if this went through, it would extend it yet another year. let me give you the breakdown. what happened if it passed in the house, it would extend the pay freeze for federal works through 2013. that would include the rank and file members of congress would would not get a pay raise. they make about $174,000 a year. it would not affect military members. republicans who fighting for this say it would save $26 billion. in fact, they say it already has saved $60 billion by having a two-year pay freeze for federal workers. this is all part of the fight to extend the payroll tax cut. yes, the debate that has lasted since last year continues. it is going to be expensive to allow for that payroll tax cut to continue. that saves workers an average of about $20 a paycheck on what they would contribute to social security
