cokie: why? susan p.: i think they thought she was a friendly white-haired cookie baking grandmother. it is true she was a grandmother but in fact, she did not make -- baked any cookies. it's so underestimated her influence. and the role she played. i was not sure there would be interest in the publishing world. we had six publishers bid on the book, a sign of a continuing curiosity people have about barbara bush. only at that point did i write her and tell her to the spirit i was worried she would say no, i would not cooperate. in which case i felt i would be screwed. and i worried if i asked her before hand and she said yes, that she would think she is have -- she would think she would have some control over the book. i signed the contract and sent her the letter. in two weeks, she sent me a letter saying she would meet with me once. which she did. in the first interview, she said she would meet a second time. then i have five long interviews with her. in the first interview, she said and you w

[laughter] aty: so she was very good passing on even to her son, the president, commentary. he had very good language as president. he did not have such good language before he became president. that is the witness i saw. that everyone in the orbit of her husband helped him do his job. she cared deeply about his successes. to make sure they were not successes for him because he could not practice -- that there were successes for everyone else. conscience was much bigger than you realized. both good and bad. but it was always for a greater good. she would cause us to see things differently. it is very easy in the white house to believe you know everything. barbara bush made sure you didn't think of it. challenge toa listen to. i greatly appreciated the wisdom she had. she was a true wisdom woman. she was contagious in her love but also taught us to practice tough love when it was necessary. cokie: as you started writing eventually, you were given access to pretty much all of barbara bu
