cokie roberts and i spent a lot of time talking about it. parents and my parents were dear friends. and there is nothing now. the families are back in the home district. host: what is the impact on politics? >> the impact is you can disagree with somebody but they always supported each other in whatever issue was going on. my dad and tip o'neil and mike mansfield were all friends. they played golf and socialized you knew them as a person it wasn't just the role or committee that was going on. and you learn to respect that. host: it seems like the white house has only gotten more microscopically examined in the age of twitter everybody has a cell phone to capture pictures. what do we know? >> i was in high school and college when my dad was in the white house. i had the advantage i didn't have to change schools i stayed in washington because i was going to a private school for girls already. i didn't have to walk in as the new kid and your dad is the president of the united states. i truly feel i have and advantage in ms. johnson was the same

i sat down with her husband steve roberts to talk about his new book “cokie, a life well lived” and what legacy has meant for journalists and women across the country. steve roberts, thank you so much for joining us. >> great pleasure, judy. >> what a wonderful book. what a wonderful picture, cokie. a life well lived. that's true, and we still miss her. >> every day. but i did this book, judy, because there were two cokies, there was the public cokie, which listeners of public broadcasting know well, public radio know well, and there were countless young women over many years who saw her on tv or listen to her on the radio and said i can be that smart. i can be that strong, i don't have to hide who i am. it was enormously powerful. but there was the private one that did something good for someone else every single day. >> you're right. there was the one we all thought we knew, the journalist, the public person but there was the daughter, the sister, the mother, the wife, and someone who lived a very full life, engaged in her faith, engaged in her family, engaged with so many friends. >>

in the new book, "cokie: a life well lived," author steve roberts, cokie's husband of 53 years, writese between a professional career and a personal life and here was cokie coming in with two kids, six grandkids, a long marriage, and yet still managed to have the career she did and so many women saw her as a role model because that's the life they wanted. >> reporter: cokie's passion for politics was in her blood. she was the daughter of u.s. representatives hale boggs, who died in a plane crash in 1972, and lindy boggs who followed in his footsteps. altogether they served the people of new orleans for 46 years. >> her seventh birthday party was in the capitol. by age 12 she was giving tours for her father's constituents. what that experience gave her in addition to knowledge, martha, was respect. >> reporter: cokie rose to fame as a political commentator at npr. ♪ and later as an anchor on our sunday show "this week." >> that's all for us this sunday. until next week that's "this week." >> reporter: but through it all, she was never too busy for friends and colleagues. >> there would
