but the colgan air disaster would become a turning point in american aviation.ing years, it was transformed from a tragic crash site into a memorial, a place for reflection, but for the families who lost loved ones, the fight that started here never stopped. >> she was brilliant, she was beautiful, and the life of the party. >> reporter: john and marilyn kausner's 24-year-old daughter elly was aboard flight 3407. how did you learn about the crash? >> our son. i got the call first. chris said there's been a plane crash, said there's no survivors. that's the only part of the call she heard. she fell on the floor. and my son said it was the worst sound he's ever heard in his life. >> you never forget that. >> reporter: when the national transportation safety board produced its report and this animation, they showed pilot error caused the plane to stall and then nosedive. it was also revealed the pilot had not been forthcoming about failing flight tests. why would you bring this poster to d.c. on your trips? >> to put a face to the tragedy. >> reporter: the families

after the colgan air crash in 2009, there were major changes in the aviation industry. >> this was aght flying into buffalo. the crew had been working a very long day. they had been fatigued. they got indications that they were entering what's called an aerodynamic stall. and they responded improperly. initially and essentially mushed into the ground. that was a sea change accident. that was a harbinger for incredible change in aviation, and left an indelible mark on hiring and a huge mark on training and changed the requirements for experience for new airline pilots. >> more safety regulations have led to fewer crashes, according to the national transportation safety board, there have been 15 major plane crashes in the u.s. since 1982, including last week's tragedy. >> the ntsb, throughout its history, has has looked at aviation accidents and attempted to find the problems that that led to it and make safety recommendations, leading to changes in the way airplanes are designed, the way flight crews are trained, the way air traffic control does its job. there is no finish line for sa

colgan air, then a feeder for continental airlines flight 3407, took off from newark liberty airport in new jersey and crashed just outside of buffalo. there was light snow, fog and sleet. at the time, 50 people died, everyone on the plane and one person in the home that the plane crashed into. the families of the victims demanded answers and reform, and they got it. exactly one year after the crash, the ntsb released its final report, which came to 46 specific conclusions. 46 that's how thorough the investigation was. that's how thorough they always are, because the experts at the ntsb don't have hot takes. they just do the work. the conclusions they arrived at included the fact that both pilots lacked experience with icing conditions. they possibly misread safety warnings, and they were both exhausted and fatigued. the first officer had flown to the departing airport in new jersey from her parents home in seattle the night before. she made that commute on a cargo plane and rode in the jump seat, which is typically an auxiliary folding seat not sufficiently comfortable for resting.

and before wednesday, there was not a major commercial crash in the united states since the colgan air crash of 2009, which left an indelible mark on aviation. the sad reality is crashes involving general aviation airplanes, small airplanes, business jets are much more common, although they rarely do happen in heavily populated, densely populated areas. >> pete, pete, you have a lot of new information here. um, can you just i want to emphasize something here, as the story is, is ongoing. we had initially been told it was a single engine plane. so you're now talking about a lear business jet. >> developing by the minute. >> that's a, that's a that's a dual engine jet. it's a jet. that's more fuel. um, that's a serious jet. it can go a long distance. right? i mean, that also could change how many people we don't know how many people, obviously, a business jet that would limit your number of people on board. we're not talking commercial, but it just shows that even what we've learned here in the past few minutes has changed the trajectory of the story a bit. >> no doubt. i'm just going to
