and cisco, which -- colgate and cisco reported a great quarter last night. google didn't exist back then but to continue this matchup i remember cisco selling at 60-80 times earnings. microsoft during that period traveled from 43 to 33. this time it's gone from 27 to 34, whoa, really scary. in the 2000 years, cisco soared to 80 it when from the 18 to 23. cisco the peaks were worth $556 billion and 616 billion and 516 billion respectively. cisco is the largest company. even after their 2013 runs, they're worth $127 billion and $284 billion. microsoft is a lot bigger than cisco. even while i can easily argue they are much better companies with slightly better balance sheets, these comparisons represent that this market simply isn't frothy. sure, it could be a prelude to froth, but these aren't reckless valuations, particularly when you throw in that microsoft and cisco deal around 2.8%, which even after taxes is twice as good a return as what you get from the ten-year treasury. if you factor in the tax differential, remember the dividends are taxed much more f

say here is that the valuations of a lot of those things, like the low growth companies, look at colgateocter & gamble, these are types of stocks we've been talking about trading at 20 to 22 times earnings. these are sort of epic multiples for these stocks. so, you go from low growth to companies that have had no growth, you know, names like microsoft and intel have seen no top line growth. but you have to put your money to work. these things are trading at about a 50% discount to the aforementioned stocks. >> i don't think i can bring myself to sell at a loss just so i can race into microsoft. i think a lot of the old tech names, people want to be long them but they want to do it using options. we saw today more calls than puts trade in almost all of these name, which is probably just a defined risk way to get long. i think if i were long microsoft, i would take that 16% rally, since earnings and i would consider it a gift and be buying puts. one thing that didn't work and boy did it not work was linkedin, and facebook, they are both down on the day. now, what that says to me is google,

because a lot of these companies, they're moving out of the colgates and some of these staples in health care and utilities into microsoft intel. these things are only expected to grow a few percent a year earnings and sales for the next few years, except that they have that yield. so now they're kind of moving into it. so i'm not sure if it's that bullish of a sign that they're moving into cyclicals. >> the move from november also needs to be noted, it was right after the election, so the utilities got crushed because people were looking at the contraption. these are really the first plays that people were going with and they were the legacy of the first part of this rally where people had to grab yield. we know yield compression -- it's been highlighted this week with some of the corporate bond issues. but people are grabbing for a different kind of yield. the tech guys have proven that they're paying investors. i think ultimately you're not seeing validation still, though. the transportation index, to me it got over the 50 today. it needs to hold this or you're seeing a lot of sell si

it was in this and also colgate.ake a look at what happened recently with proctor & gamble, they disappointed on earnings, this went down about 6.5%. still, this group is trading at a good multiple over what the market is trading at, and i think that's probably going to revert. i don't think the overall market is expensive, but i think the staples are. i think this might be a good time to start rotating out of them. >> what did you notice from the options action in these names today? >> well, you know, it's interesting, dan has highlighted these types of trades for quite a few months now. today, one of the things we were seeing were buyers of the july 55 puts. l low volatility names. they were costing about 57 cents f. you own the stocks, i think you can finance these puts with the dividends you're collecting. otherwise, just sell them. the broad market or something underperforming. >> you think the staples are stretched, don't you? >> i do. i've thought that for a while. that's the safety play, it's the brand play.
