(laughter) >> jon: what are... what would you say if you had to distill it down the general consensus of your recipe? >> if you look at the 13 rules, just take the first one and last one you essentially have the book. the first one says it will look better in the morning. no matter how bad things look. go to bed with an optimistic attitude, convey that optimism to your followers and it will look better in the morning. >> jon: you're not a drinker, are you? i joined personally because of colin powell. and in my interview that i had for the job, in february of 2011, i said, what do you want to do when you come here. i mentioned working on human rights, democracy in china, but also working on human rights and democracy in the middle east. so that summer, the summer of 2001, he said start working with bill burns, and ryan crocker. bill was the assistant secretary and i had known them from my iteration here before. so we were already working together on some new things to be doing in the middle east before 9/11. i remember right after 9/11, there was a lot of talk from across the river from the pentagon about draining the swamp. and those of us who had gotten into this business, who had been in it for some time, knew that that wasn't going to be sufficient. that you would spend -- we would spend the rest of our lives killing off individuals, one by one. so i wrote an outside the system memo which is in some box somewhere in the archives to powell saying that this was an insufficient st

on my show and i played this for colin powell and he was outraged by it of course he pointed out that he is probably in. called similar things certainly not to his face because he was a four star general but many of the things would get back to him but he made a point that at some point in time and our discourse we have got to stop this and people have got to stop hiding behind the anonymity of social media. talk radio and and then. and then we not just as african-americans but i just think all of us black white this is and bear seeing as an american i mean we all should be outraged by this and if the management and ownership of that station in phoenix arizona doesn't react to this in an appropriate manner then you can only assume that they condone this type of comedy show this i mean this was like pushing the extreme end of the envelope but just a couple of days ago they were at one of the republican party means i think was an all modern browsers i was someplace out the midwest they they set up an outhouse montana outside it was in the hilton parking lot but montana republican party

former secretaries of state henry kissinger, george schultz, james baker, colin powell, and condoleezza rice recently wrote an op-ped driving this point home. i just want to quote it. some say it's good enough to protect our navigational interests through customary international law and if that approach fails, then we can use force or threaten to do so. but customary law is vague and doesn't provide a strong foundation for critical national security rights. what's more, the use of force can be risky and costly. joining the convention would put our vital rights on a firmer legal basis. gaining legal certainty and legitimacy as we operate in the world's largest international zone. i would call everybody's attention to a full-page advertisement in today's "wall street journal." featuring the five secretaries, all of whom cite these reasons for why they believe we should ratify this treaty. the bottom line is this. do we really want to entrust our national security to an unwritten set of rules? where our security would be enhanced by having clarity ahead of time. is there any other area in

national security advisor, the differences between weinberger and george schultz, difference between colin powell and don rumsfeld just recently and then your differences with vance. does that work? is it better to have -- for president to have them think alike or be that different? >> first of all, i think it really is useful for the president to have different opinions. we see a situation these days in which is inner decision maker circle around the president is very small, very tight. and it's very unanimous. that is part of the explanation for mistakes we have made in iraq. i think disagreement within bounds is useful. it becomes motivated to the point of personal and mos influences the positions people take that is counterproductive. i am not the one that can say that the conflict between me and vance did not have that personal in it. i think there may be some interview when you were interviewing president carter you can ask him because carters remember when i used to tell him. he certainly remembers how vance conducted himself. my guess is that carter will confirm what i'm saying. namely i
