joining us now the former republican secretary of state and retired general colin powell. general powell, thank you so much for joining us. what do you make of this democratic push right now to impeach president trump for a second time for inciting this insurrection? >> it really does not excite me. we have 13 days to go? >> yes. >> nothing will really happen in that 13-day period. let it play out now. the president is under such pressure now that he is just going to do everything that he can to stay alive, frankly and to figure out what comes next. i would not detour into, you know, the different pieces of the constitution that we think would be helpful. i just want him out. i want him out of office. >> you want the vice president to implement the 25th amendment to the constitution and get a majority of the cabinet to agree and push him out? is that what you are saying? >> no. i didn't say that at all. i would not work with either the 25th amendment or try to do an impeachment. it is too late for that. that is too slow. i just want to get him out of office now. about 13 da

we got to make sure we're on top of this. >> scathing indictment there from general colin powell on "e" this morning. general powell asking a big question that remains. why was law enforcement so completely unprepared? capitol police were quickly overwhelmed by the mob of trump supporters, arresting just 14 people as rioters made their way in and then out of the capitol. one congressman said as many as 60 capitol police officers were injured. federal prosecutors have charged 55 suspects in connection with the insurgency. one of those had a military style rifle and 11 molotov cocktails. the d.c. u.s. attorney refused to rule out bringing charges against president trump for his role in inciting the mob to storm the capitol. joining our conversation is former cia director john brennan and former congresswoman donna edwards. director brennan, when we spoke 24 hours ago, it felt like a slow response from law enforcement. it wasn't clear exactly what was going on. i think i want to know what you think now and if you agree with general powell 24 hours later? >> well, like secretary powell an

brennan, first, your reaction to what former secretary of state colin powell said yesterday about what. >> well, secretary powell is absolutely correct. this was a massive security failure. and questions need to be raised immediately about why there wasn't better preparation for what was not an anticipated event. for weeks, we knew that there would be tens of thousands of people assembling in washington to support these specious claims of donald trump. and we knew their ire was not going to be directed against the white house, it was going to be directed against the congress where the vote to certify president-elect biden was going to be taking place. so therefore, why was there not greater preparation, why was there not greater perimeter security put out, in terms of barricades and other types of things to prevent the preaching of the congress? therefore, i know that capitol police did their level best to try to deal with the situation as it was unfolding, but the lack of the contingency planning. where were the additional forces, as secretary powell said, that could have been deploye

i think that the suggestion of colin powell's former chief of staff that general flynn be court martialed, be called back into service, which the military has the ability to do, and court martialed for calling for martial law is a very good idea. these sorts of actions need to be taken in the days ahead. but here's the good news, ali. this it was a big night for american democracy, a really positive night because it was the beginning of the post-trump era. so you can hear the hissing coming out of the trump balloon. he is dead man walking politically and i know we've all been traumatized by him, but he is not going to have very much power as a former president. remember, this was georgia. this was not some kind of like blue state. this was georgia that he went to to try to -- and he utterly failed. so any republican who is too afraid of him, dancing to his tune, you know, is living in the past because the future of american politics, despite how much he tries, is mostly not going to include donald trump and that's something that we started out tonight and is very good news for this countr
