schumer and collins wouldn't be great in a room together trying to negotiate anything, but collins is of the first republican senators that biden reached out to after he won the election. clearly that's going to make, perhaps, a difference if he can do a bipartisan deal. i do think it's kind of telling, though, that a couple days ago and over the weekend, we heard susan collins say this package is too big in regards to coronavirus relief as she quickly called out the $1400 check saying people who make $300 shouldn't get those checks, they need to be more targeted. so even people like susan collins who biden has a close relationship with, she's not there yet. she wants a smaller package. so it goes back to what we were talking about before, will he go for a more ambitious package, the president, or will he try to go for the bipartisanship that he wants. >> and as they do that, the impeachment trial will go ahead. how long will the trial be? how much evidence will the house managers try to bring into the senate trial, meaning how many witnesses will they call, how much video will they u

i want to bring in cnn's white house correspondent, kaitlan collins. what a day, what a day as we watched all of this going on and what's happening right now. the president to my last statement, increasingly isolated. republicans turning against him. we are seeing resignations tonight. what's going on? >> reporter: and we might see more resignations coming because we are now hearing that top officials are considering resigning not just lower-level communications officials, we're hearing real people that are working with the president every day are now considering resigning over the response that he had to that pro-trump mob breaching capitol hill. don, that includes the national security adviser, robert o'brien, the deputy national security adviser, matt pottenger, and the deputy chief of staff, chris lalgds l.ladel. there's a lot of conversation about whether or not people are going to resign because there's going to be criticism over that if they do. an 11th hour resignation, what does that mean when the president only has two weeks left in office. b

i think it is fair that susan collins got it half right. i think he did learn a lesson. what do you think? >> i think the lesson he learned is he can do these things and basically get away with it. i mean, this is exactly what i think democrats have been warning about all along, which is that this is an emboldened president. he did not learn any lessons, not from the mueller investigation, not from the impeachment proceedings. he then proceeded to have another call that was basically the ukraine call part two in which he tries to strong-arm an official to do something that is either unethical or frankly illegal. look, president trump has never understood the boundaries of legal or ethical behavior, especially in the context of an american democracy, and one of the things the ukraine call was all about was this idea that he could do anything, go to any lengths to get a political up side and that's exactly what is happening now. republicans on capitol hill are basically backing him up in the senate, saying that's okay. it is okay to do that, we're going to have your back.

nbc ease ben collins has been covering this movement and joins us now.that i think is in the id of a lot of people who've been following qanon which is to hell with qanon. now that they've had their hearts broken, why should i give a damn what's next for them? >> it's a good question and really you don't have to care about the specific people, i understand, you know, they are -- this conspiracy theory is so deeply anti-semitic, so horrific, that you don't want this thing to survive. you don't want these people to find an easy out. and i understand that. but the problem is the people who do -- are currently offering outs to these people are much worse people. they are white supremacists. they are people who are driving people to action. now, qanon is based on the idea that everything is going according to plan. everything's going to work out. and when it doesn't work out, they don't -- they don't remain quite that passive. you know, we've seen this thing where white supremacist groups have been actively targeting qanon supporters in the last few weeks. th

you know, call up ben collins and brandy and the capitol police would have had an idea of what was coming? >> absolutely. yeah. that's true. also, ben and brandy are more entrenched than most of this, and it's hard to wrap your head around the intelligence failure, and there's three levels of failure, one is before the event. how were they not better prepared? as we understand the defense officials said the justice department officials did not fully understand the threat and prepare for it. then you have the day of, you have the justice department saying, look, we had federal agents ready to go and be deployed immediately, and the capitol police said no, this is our jurisdiction and did not call them in in time and they should have been ready to go on standby, so you have the justice department blaming the capitol police for that, and then you have what is happening now, it's difficult to track down these people, using social media, matching faces on footages we have seen, like the man sitting at the speaker's desk, and that is going to be difficult. the acting u.s. attorney for washingto
