t coin duran, the owner of the homemade cafe in southwest berkeley, may be the only restaurant owner whose made a business of giving away food for free. it all started a few years ago, when collin to do something rather unusual in the restaurant business. offering anyone who's famished, a free breakfast. >> if you're hungry and need food, we'll feed you. >> reporter: when the pandemic hit, the need grew so much, collin decide to make it official, calling it the everybody eats program. all you have to do is grab one of the coupons on his bulletin board and sit down. the only payment required is a thank you. >> the typical everybody eats meet is our basic two-egg breakfast. two eggs cooked however the customer likes it. they get a side of delicious home fries and toast. >> reporter: a neighborhood resident, samantha has been relying on food assistance programs to get by. being able to eat free of charge at the cafe, she says, had been a god send. >> i have a budget, fixed income. i have to find the people that can help out with little things financially. >> reporter: paying customers to sttouches me right o their here. it just touches me in my heart. >> reporter: collin's program
