so the late u 19th century is the american colonial expansion period. well that's when treaty making really comes to an end. it's often thought it comes to an end with this statute found in section 71 which basically says that no indian nation or tribe within the united states shall be. acknowledged or recognized assen independent nation with whom the united states may contract by treaty and then it goes on to provide but nothing shall abandon the prior treaties. now it's often thought that treaty making ended, but it didn't. this statute was the result of a fight between the house and senate over who makes indian policy. why? indian policy was then expensive. you had to pay annuitieannuitie doctors out, send agriculturalists out, and who begins appropriations bills by custom? the house. but who ratifies treaties, the senate. is the house involved, no, not with treaties. so what did they do? the house held up interiors appropriations for a couple years in order to get a say in this whole thing and the result was this statute. but the statute wasn't inte

and, certainly, if you look at the case of colonial virginia, virginia was the california of the 13 colonies; that is to say it was the richest, for example. and the colonial governor, lord dunmore, who was under threat by the settlers, in fact, talked about and tried to do what abraham lincoln did circa 1863. recall that during the u.s. civil war when the descendants of the slave owners rose up against washington, d.c -- that is to say, the united states of america -- and tried to overthrow that government, that lincoln felt that in order to preserve the united states of america, he had to free the slaves to save the union. not necessarily out of any kind of benevolence, although some would like us to believe that. it is a map of the virginia colony.it is striking because john smith had written entry surveying materials -- rudimentary survey materials. he went up and down the river and had a sextant he would use on different landmarks. from that, he was able to create this accurate map of the region in use as a map for 200 years after he created it. as you can see, on this map he did not put a picture of himself. he put a picture of the native andican chief in the corner a picture of another native american here. there are little crosses in some areas along the rivers he put there. that was the limits of the area he individually surveyed himself. were areas heat relied upon the knowledge of the natives of the area to map the rest of the area. you can see how accurate that is as well. it was particularly successful and amazing he was able to do the job he was on this. smiley stole. there were two copies of this map missing from the boston public library. when smiley admitted to taking them out, he only admitted to stealing one. did
