[ applause ] >> our wish, our hope, our prayer for the citizens of colorado, the brave firefighters, the reelected officials in colorado that they continue to address this as they have with diligence and that soon the fires will be put out and that people and your land will soon be safe again. i want to before i get into some of my comments, as i look at the list of speakers that you have and will have, you have bands and you have the warm-up act for the bands. i'm sort of the warm up act for the warm up act. i have a few things that i would like to address. i need to tell you about wyoming and a little bit about me. first of all, i'm a 4th generation rancher from wyoming and very proud of that. i'm proud to call wyoming home and proud to say that i am a westerner. i want to also tell you to the extent that some of you may not be familiar with this part of the

colorado river base sin, arkansas this, colorado that. he was considered one of the most powerful people there as the chairman of the interior committee. and we had done bratsman and frank abbotts. so that was 1970 and we were the second most conservative delegation voting in the house. but it fit with joe coors and that's how the world saw us. all of those young hopeaholics that moved in. there were so many of them, that the permanent settlers here didn't have time to encircle them and tell them to chill out. they all came in and had selected colorado by choice. they thought it was the greatest place on the planet and they were going to make it. they were really going to make it a wonderful place to live and they were going to follow all of these things that people had talked about in the '60s. so the big rumble started in 1970 when craig barnes decided to run against buy biron rogers. he won by 30 votes out of 54,406. you forgot that, didn't you? 30 votes. he defeated this old time who had been there and everybody assumed would be there

you look at the map and how close aurora, colorado, is to denver, colorado, just east. that could be a saving grace in effect in the work to try to save some lives there. as you said, there are 14 reported dead right now and at least 50 injured and we have some information in terms of where those went. again, during the briefing, they noted where they were sending some of the victims. five victims going to denver hospital, 14 to university hospital, three to the hospital in south denver, also two to the hospital in parker and two to swedish medical center and four transported to children's hospital. as you heard in the listing of those hospitals, many in the denver area, or in denver itself. so, that location, aurora, colorado, some 330,000 people. not large, not small, necessarily, but would it have the capacity, as they deal with this tragedy in that town? so, 330,000 people, about 20 miles east of denver. and that showing, that midnight showing, as you just had a discussion with a reporter on the ground, that was the first of some 20 showings they were going to have

in colorado. they would have to get records from the internet service provider that he may use to go online for his email messaging, his phone records, other records of his, travel records, credit cards. so to be able to rule that out in the middle of the night might be difficult, not having the business records that they need. they would be trying to seek all of that on an emergency basis. but i know from past experience it takes a little bit of time to get all of that and to make a definitive ruling that he's not part of some other organization. and you also have to fear copycat shooters, that this could inspire somebody else right now to go out and do something similar today, tomorrow, or next week. >> and right now as investigators try to comb through the apartment, look at it, and continue to comb over the vehicle, would the fbi be involved in that or is that strictly local police at this point? >> well, a number of agencies would be involved. the police would be contacting the fbi, the atf,

colorado movie theater. this is in aurora, colorado. a suburb near denver. now, the details are still sketchy. what we do know is there has been a multiple-victim shooting at a movie theater. they were showing a midnight screening of "the dark knight rises," of course, the new batman movie. as i said, this is in the denver, colorado, area. now, police are on the scene. you can see there, this is a live picture from our affiliate kusa. now, at this point, they are estimating that between 20 and 30 people have been injured. those victims have been transported to three local hospitals and there are reports that there is a suspect in custody, but what we don't know, and police have not been able to confirm if that was the only suspect in the shooting. a lot of information coming from witnesses on the scene. one of those witnesses' reports says the assailant may have been wearing a gas mask. tear gas reportedly went off in this century 16 movie theater, this in the aurora town center, following the gunfire. the w

this is a difficult week for all of us from colorado. there were two movie theaters in the denver metro area that were showing this premiere at midnight last thursday night. so there were people from all over the community in that theater. they are with their families and their friends. almost the entire employees of a restaurant in colorado, they went to have a fun evening on a summer night and tragedy of course struck that night, unexpectedly, to everybody. i have been overwhelmed as we all have in the delegation by the support of the community for all of the victims of this shooting and their family. the way theommunitiesave come together, aurora and denver and engelwood and all of the communities has been a blessed thing to see for all of us. no one can maksense of the tragedy like this, and the stories that heroism are still coming out every day. the stories of miracles, babies born just a day or two after in the same hospital where the father lies in a coma. . while we hear all these stories of heroism and the first responders rush

that's what he was doing, stationed in colorado.parently, by all accounts, went to the movies that night with some of his buddies. very, very sad business. the navy this morning is preparing, with the permission of his family, to render full military honors to this young man. he may have served in the military for less than a year, but the navy considers him, obviously, one of their own. they can also tell us that this young man came from a military navy family, that both his father and his grandfather served. a navy arrived at his parent's home in chicago last night to give them the news. we are told there are assistance officers with the family, helping them get through this really tragic business. because what this is, is the same kind of procedure the u.s. military goes through when they lose someone in the combat zone, and then they move to assist the family. the procedures are no different when someone falls, the military really does move in and try to do everything it can to help the family. the navy expects to, randi, issue

once again live from aurora, colorado. see the microphones there outside the arapaho county courthouse. we're awaiting a news conference from some of the members of the proscution team. whether the public defenders will also speak we do not know but we expect the prosecutors will step up to those microphones shortly and give us whatever information they can about the charges agains james holmes, the suspect in the theater massacre. once again back to william buckley, the retired chief deputy district attorney in denver. you helped write the statute that says victims have rights to be in the courtroom and present at every step of this proceeding. there are an awful lot of victims there. where are they going to get the space if all of them will be in the courtroom? >> that will be a real logistical problem. the constitutional amendment in colorado, i was on the committee that wrote it, that victims have a right to be notified of, to be present at and to be heard where relevant at all critical stages of the prosecution. and w

leeanne gregg there from the mall in colorado.things we also found out moments ago from the news conference from the police chief, just how well planned this attack seemed to be. we heard a lot about what he was wearing during the attack. full body armor. throat protector, groin protector. he was in all black wearing a ballistic helmet as well. 24-year-old james holmes born on december 13, 1987. police say that holmes also booby-trapped his apartment as well. that apartment in a complex four miles from the theater where the shooting spree took place. aurora, colorado's police chief talked about what's inside. we are not sure what we were dealing with in the home. there appears to be incendiary devices, chemicals there. they are linked together with wires. as a layman, it's something i have never seen before. we have smart bomb techs up there trying to figure out what we are going to do. >> reuters correspondent stephanie simon joining me now from the apartment complex. have they been able to get inside yet? >> reporter: just about

. >>> turning to the tragedy in colorado. nearly 48 hours after an unimaginable act of violence rocked the city of aurora, we're learning more about the suspected killer and the innocent moviegoers he's accused of killing. we've been gathering photos of the 12 victims that died. they are parents, husbands, wives and children. 27-year-old alex sullivan was celebrating his birthday with friends at the movies and the youngest victim, 6-year-old veronica sullivan was excited about starting swimming classes. dozens of people survived the massacre. some of them bay area residents including two teenage girls who were watching the premiere with their friends when one of them was hit. kimberly terry is here with more on their terrifying experience. >> reporter: they say this trip to see the movie on opening night had been planned for weeks. they were seated next to the wall that separates their theater from the one where the shooter opened fire. it was about 20 minutes into the movie when the group of teens knew something wasn't right
