in the november election, colorado's house also went democratic. so colorado now is all blue. not by huge margins. not by overwhelming numbers, but it's blue. in the legislature and the governor's house. that meant when newtown happened, after aurora and after columbine -- i mean, after aurora, before that, after all the other experience that colorado has had with gun violence, today colorado decided to change some things. after all those previous things, nothing had changed. today, something started to change. today has been a very dramatic day. seven pieces of gun-related legislation moving one after the other through the state legislature today. the first one was about domestic violence. it already says in federal law that if you've got a domestic violence conviction, if you've got a domestic violence protection order against you, under federal law you are not supposed to be able to are a gun. colorado did not have in place a mechanism at the state level to enforce that. so what passed this morning, the first bill that advanced this morning in colorado, would create that me

this is happening in colorado at an already heightened time. the colorado legislature has been debating and passing gun reform legislation and that debate has been unusually contentious. they have pledged on the floor of the senate that they will disobey them. they will disobey the state's new laws. democratic lawmakers have received threats for their support of gun reform. criminal charges have been brought against people for making death threats against pro gun legislators. the sheriff in el paso county, which is where tom clements was killed, his office is the one in charge of the investigation, the sheriff is one of the sheriffs who has been highly critical of the gun legislation. so all of that pre-existing tension and those threats and that political battle on a day when a member of his cabinet was murdered by means of a gun, the governor in colorado today did not reschedule. he went ahead and signed those three new pieces of gun legislation into law. universal back ground checks, a law that requires customers to pay for the background ch

the same man wanted in the killing of tom clements in colorado. the suspect was gunned down after a wild chase in a car similar to the one seen leaving the home where clements was shot dead. he was shot dead after he answered his front door. cnn's ed lavandera live for us in decatur, texas. bring us up to speed on this investigation and the latest. >> hundreds of miles away from where tom clements was gunned down just a few days ago, a high-speed chase, a firefight, and now colorado investigators are here in texas trying to connect the dots. this is how a high-speed chase across north texas ended. a black cadillac with two different colorado license plates smashed by an 18-wheeler. but the crash didn't stop the driver from getting out of the car and firing away at law enforcement officers. he was shot and killed in the firefight. >> he wasn't planning on being taken alive. i mean, that's obvious that he was trying to hurt somebody and he was trying to hurt the police. >> reporter: the chase started when a sheriff's deputy tried to pull the cadilla

we are at a rest stop off interstate 25 between colorado springs and pueblo, colorado. we are in the middle of a serious storm. you could see the flags over here just being whipped by the wind. the snow is blowing very dramatically. it hurts your face just to be standing out here in the snow. over here you can see -- or you can't see interstate 25. normally the speed limit on the interstate is 75 miles per hour. you can see this vehicle goes by us going much slowerer. you can also see on the other side of the interstate vehicles heading south at a very slow rate of speed. perhaps 30 miles an hour or so. for the past 20 miles we have seen a succession of accidents. multi car pileups, spinouts, traffic backed up for a half mile or so heading south because of the accidents. we couldn't even pull over to shoot pictures of what happened. it was just too dangerous. a very serious winter-type storm has hit colorado in early spring. it's not just colorado impacted by these closures affecting interstate 25 which are northbound north of denver, south of here in colorado springs.

it happened here at tom khreplant's home in monument colorado on tuesday night.ess described seeing a black lincoln or cadillac idling outside the victim's home 15 minutes before the shooting. authorities called it a vehicle of interest. late this morning at about 11:00 a.m. central time, more than 500 miles away in texas, a deputy tried to pull over a man heading south. it was just a routine traffic violation. the driver of the car responded by opening fire on the deputy. shooting and hitting him three times before taking off. he then sped in and out of traffic at about 100 miles per hour shooting out the window of his car at the officers who were following him in the high speed chase. ultimately he crashed the car into an 18 wheeler. he got out of the car again and fired on the officers again and the officers returned fire, and he was hit. tonight colorado investigators are on their way to tuesday to determine whether that man in the high speed chase might be linked to the killing much tom clements, the colorado prisons' chief. they have fingerprinted him, and

i see the colorado plateau. this bowl is from american museum of natural history and that's where it is now. that's the storage place. where it was from before is pueblo bonito in chaco canyon where there were rooms filled to the ceiling with bowls stacked within each other, bowls like this. all their designs, you can kind of get a glimpse around this. they have this flawless symmetry blending all the way around. it looks like that place. it looks like that landscape. i look into this and i see the sharp edges of the land. i see the way the earth is shaped out there. i see the routes in their vessels. i mean, to understand these, this one came out of a 13th century site in southwest colorado and i would sit with these bowls for hours and hours, drawing them into my sketch book because that was the only way i could really understand the complexity of how they got their symmetries to match up because i could never get them to match up in my drawings. i could never do a 100 percent accurate rendition of these becau
