and you know, the colorado recalls, especially if you ask anybody in the beltway, colorado recalls have become the story about gun policy after newtown, right? what happened in colorado, those two recalls, they have become central to the understanding of the impossibility of getting any real reform in this country. since those recalls, though, we have also learned something else really important about what changed in colorado, and that's the actual data on what colorado's change in the law did. so, it used to be that in a private sale of a gun in colorado, there'd be no background check. since the laws went into effect in july, there have been about 4,500 private sales of guns in colorado. but now because of the new law, there has been a background check, and 98% of the time, whoever was buying the gun went through the background check fine. they got okayed to buy the gun. turns out, they're not a felon, they don't have a domestic violence protection order against them or something, they have a right to own a gun, and so, the transaction went through, 98% of the time, fine. but 2% of th

colorado is torn on this issue. even dear friends of mine are on both sides of this issue in colorado. and arapaho county, colorado, is known as a swing county. not only as goes arapaho county does so go the state in terms of political elections, but very often, as goes arapaho county, so goes the rest of the country. it is not hard right, it is not hard left. they're pretty much right down the middle on a variety of issues. very, very forward-thinking county that has very, very proactive and forward-thinking police department, fire department, paramedic systems, hospitals, what have you. really on the cutting edge in many ways. and so, you know, this is -- this county in particular, if you could say is this county, does it feel one way or the other on gun control? no, i would suspect knowing arapaho county, probably right down the middle, depending who you talk to. >> today was the left day of regular classes before final exams next week at arapaho high school. the images on the left side of your screen there, the

we're getting information from colorado, specifically, centennial, colorado.hool district. we know that's where the columbine school shooting happened in 1999. we're told in arapahoe high school, the school you're looking at the google earth representation of, inside the school, two people have been shot, and the gunman, according to officials, still inside of the school. and we're waiting to get more information to find out the extent of the injuries and obviously who the gunman is and whether or not they have the situation under control, but this is all just coming in to cnn as we speak. and we're checking with our sources and with officials there in colorado to try to get more information. jane has been telling you about the procedures that are used when schools are put on lockdown and how these officers and officials go inside to try to figure out, to get control of these particular situations. and since columbine, since newtown, since all of these shootings, sparks middle school, that we have been going over, talking about the particular incidents. there

one is what's going on in colorado.hat seems to be ground zero for a lot of these events, for young people. is there something about mental health issues in that state, about the availability of guns, what exactly is going on in colorado to help us understand how to prevent this sort of thing from happening again, number one. and number two, i think based on what we know so far, we can speculate about the mindset of this shooter. i suspect once again, it's going to be an untreated mental health issue. think about how agitated a young person would have to be to come in, walk in with a shotgun openly in hand, scare, cause other students to scatter, so much so that they quickly got the information throughout the school and to the teacher in question that this kid was looking for him. he randomly shoots, we think, three other kids and then quickly shoots himself. that is a very altered state for him to have been in to be that violent so we are going to hear more about i think the mental state once again of this young person

so under colorado's law, you had to do this. the new york state supreme court ruled by a 4-3 decision that you didn't have to go. that was a surprise to a lot of people. >> i was woken p by phone calls from my lawyers and definitely had no idea what they were talking about and still am in shock. people have told me that they definitely thought this wasn't going to happen, which they did not really share with me previously. but i'm still trying to process this. i'm just so grateful that new york understands the importance of confidential sources and news gathering and is really saying this is the state where you come here and you will not be subject to the laws or whim of a random injuries particulars that wants to subpoena your sources. meaning we can go and guarantee confidentiality and mean it. >> i worked in colorado for this channel for a lot of different cases. i worked for the jonbenet ramsey case, for tim mcvey, the trial was held there. and frankly was never aware that the confidentiality of my sources wasn't protected.

zimplt we're going to start right now in colorado. a day after a school shooting just miles from columbine. ana cabrera, live in centennial. ana, what's the latest on this investigation? >> we have the arapahoe county sheriff's office, we have the federal bureau of investigation also helping the colorado bureau of investigation. we're told this is a search and an investigation that could take several days, if not longer. one of the places they are currently searching is the home where the shooter lived as well as his father's home. noushg the shooter has been identified as 18-year-old karl pierson, a student at the school. we understand he was a member of the debate team. he walked into the school with a shotgun, and that's one of the big questions and holes right now. where did he get this gun? the sheriff telling me this morning that they hope to be able to answer that question perhaps at a press conference that is scheduled in just a couple of hours from now as well as answering questions about more of the evidence they may have co

these are live pictures from centennial colorado.he scene of a school shooting earlier today we just received a briefing from the sheriff of arapaho county. his name is grayson robinson. he detailed what happened earlier in the day, and we can tell you that the suspect was a student at arapa ho high school. the student walked in to one of the west entrances of the school armed with a shotgun. visibly this was not a situation where the student who was attempting to hide the weapon. the student walked in armed with a shotgun, and asked other students in the immediate proximity for a particular teacher, called out a teacher by name. we understand that word quickly got to that teacher, that there was someone with i will intent looking for him. and that teacher left the school, and as paul just mentioned a moment ago there is the thought that the teacher in leaving the school was attempting to draw the shooter out with him. we understand that there were two students shot. the first student is being treated at the hospital and the second s
