what is going on in colorado that we need to know about? >> well, colorado really significantly outranked the rest of the states with the possibility exception of washington which was number two. and colorado really, what it does well is low income tax rate, one of the lowest in the country. and then it has this budding start-up scene in boulder and denver, a lot of venture capitol going to women owned businesses there. and a lot of tech companies are kind of migrating out east, actually, they'll start in the san francisco bay area and get seated there and then it just becomes too expensive to live there any more. so when they want to grow and they want to hire employees, they move out to boulder or denver. >> austin is another good example. i've seen a lot of young people who find they cannot afford to live in the bay area who are moving to places like boulder and austin which are very bay area similar. >> exactly. >> and then there is kind of another tier down, julie. austin and boulder are not very affordable. and we're seeing some kind

you guys had a confirmed instance in colorado.e your scientific advisers explained to you how well are you surveilling -- how well is there virus surveillance? i imagine not every person who has tested or hospitalized do we look at the strain of virus they had or do we. i mean, we found one. how do we know it's one? you get my point? what are your scientific advisers telling you? >> so we have several providers that we use for testing. we do our state lab. maybe one-third of the tests in the state through there. and we use several other private labs that fill out the rest of the roster for the majority of tests. most of those private partners don't yet and are not -- don't have the capability and are not doing the screening but we are in the state lab doing the initial screen. somewhere around 2one-third of the tests we're doing the initial screen on. it's not definitive. it then says likely positives on the variant to do the more details analysis which they do at the state lab. this is not the most widespread variant in our state

now, the governor of colorado. i appreciate your time.sident biden says the distribution to states will increase to minimum of 10 million doses starting next week. that would be an increase of 1.4 million doses. you said colorado is ready, you would be using three to four times as much vaccine as you have been getting. from your understanding from the administration, does this do that for you? >> what this is, it is a 16% increase, moving the right direction. in addition, it is providing stability for three weeks. 16% increase and also telling us it will stay at that level. next week, week after, week after that. it is numbers we can plan for, to put it in perspective. colorado this coming week, 83,000 doses, state of 5.7 million people. we have to run the exact math, but talking about approximately 100,000 doses for the following weeks. still, a small step in the ramp up. we certainly hope there's several times that level of dose as we get into march, but we're excited to get it out. this is life-saving and about ending the pandemic. >>

. >> all right, from one governor to another i want to bring in the governor of colorado.ing. you just heard what west virginia's governor is doing there, one of the states leading in vaccine distribution. your state has administered about 61% of the doses you've received. how is it going in your state, and what are your biggest challenges? >> yeah, to be clear, don, every dose that we get we use the same week we get it. in fact, one of the first things we put in place was a three-day rule. any provider of hospital or pharmacy we work with, when we get them the vaccine they have three days to use it or we'll assign them to another provider. we remain in the top ten states in getting it out. but as governor justice indicated, it's not coming to our states at a fast enough rate to reach everybody. sure, we could do it by valentine's day. we could do it by the end of february if we had the vaccine. we're a state of 5.7 million people. we've been receiving about 70 to 80,000 doses a week. i understand we're going to get just over 90,000 next week, getting a bit better. but whe

i want to talk about some of those people in colorado.c governor of that state jared polis, a state also experiencing vaccine shortages. governor, what's going on there? >> well, to put things in perspective, the number of vaccines we will be receiving next week in our state, a state of 5.7 million people, is about 83,000. so if you do the math that would take an awfully long time until we can achieve the level of immunity we need to to end the pandemic. in the meantime we're focused on protecting people age 70 and up and making sure every vaccine is used within a few days and that's what we're doing. >> how are you doing as far as -- how much do you have left? >> well, we get it every week, monday or tuesday, our goal is to be out of it by sunday. we certainly could be out of it earlier, but we use it over the week avoiding long lines and we do it through hospitals, community health clinics, we do stand up centers to make sure we have equity in our distribution in some of the poorest zip codes in colorado and we've done it in the parking
