the colorado spring police are on the scene at colorado springs airport. told that on this airtran flight 39 from atlanta to san francisco, a young man was taken into custody after the plane was diverted. there are varying reports that say the suspect was intoxicated and might have locked himself in the bathroom and refused to come out. it was then that we're told that authorities said we can't fool around with this. they let the government know -- this is a picture taken of this passenger on the flight a little while ago. you might have seen this earlier today. and then they radioed back and said, look, we've got a problem here. and deciding that the better part was not to take any risk. norad immediately released two f-16's that tailed the plane down for this landing to colorado springs. everyone safe on the flight. the passenger has been taken into custody. that's all we know. but, again, this could have been obviously a big deal. you only send f-16's to tail a plane if you fear that plane might be used either as a weapon or god forebid even worse. 9/11

i also liked an idea from colorado springs district 11. district used $6 million of a $150 million bond issue passed by voters in 2006 to build a fiber optic ring around the district. that means they get rid of the cable guy and they're saving $550,000 a year in cable fees. i found a lot of districts -- not a lot. a few districts focusing on attendance, and this increases their per pupil funding but more to the point to me, at least it goes to the heart of what schools are supposed to be doing. in california, districts received state funding based on how many days each student actually attended school the year before. that comes to $40 a day when a student attends and nothing when he doesn't. so long beach unified school district, just one example, shifted ten of its social workers and counselors into a new truancy strike force that will identify and work with frequent truants. a 2% increase in attendance this year should relate, translate into an additional $3 million in state support next year. although california's problems are so deep,
