this weekend we partnered with for a visit to colorado springs, colorado. montgomery pike was sent into the southwest to region, similar to lewis & clark who were sent to the northwestern part of the newly acquired louisiana territory. southwest nt to this part of the territory. and for his perspective, when he came out here, he really walked off the map. e went to an area that was unknown. >> when pike first seized the grand peak, he thinks they'll each the top of it in a few days. but it takes weeks to approach. what we believe is a lower mountain on the flanks of mt. rosa.k called so he turned around and at that oint, pike wrote in his journals that given the conditions, given the equipment time, no had at the one could have summited the peak. peak inspired the poem that became "america the eautiful" written by katherine lee bates, who came here to olorado springs to teach a summer course at colorado college in 1893. the view down from the plains to inspiredf the mountain the poetry. arenspired the manuals that capturing that poetry of the united states.

lost the irony although i've served e served in the army and prepared for battle my desert is colorado springs my junldz were the sweltering summers of south carolina but nevertheless, i stand here today to give voice to those who are now silent those who that gave in their life in battle out of duty and honor i've found with the stories i've heard from my veteran students and other veterans who have seen embattle each one fall even gave in their life for the man standing next to them by honoring the fall we must also honor who those who they for the truth of the matter u fought for and with those who made it back home this monument speaks for those who were made silent by death we as the community need to give voice to those who silently live on from our elected koflz of officials to our businesses and are corporations to every veteran service organization and amongst the veteran community itself we need to live our lives remembering the great skasz made for us to work together to serve those who have served with the dedication of that monument and the eir turning of the excavated soil we kne

bypassing colorado springs was something that state highway officials was eager to do. it had become a notorious bottleneck. u.s. 6 and 40 were forced together in this narrow valley where idaho springs is located and forced to go right through the middle of town, past all the caves, past the motels, past the gas stations, people turning on and off the road really slowing traffic down where it became known as the turtle route and known to truckers and travelers as one of the most congested stretch of highway in all of rural america. state highway planners determined to build a four-lane limited access bypass, which i showed you before, on the mountain side just above town on the south. the construction began in late 1957 and in february 1958 with the bypass almost completed state highway officials led chamber of commerce types on a tour of this new road. the business owners were pretty excited about this spanking modern road with its smooth sweeping four lanes and controlled access on and off ramps and its big signs pointing to idaho springs, they were excited until they
