nick watt is in colorado springs. nick, the suspect is in the hospital and we're learning new details about him. give us the latest. >> reporter: well, it is key these charges that he's facing because so far investigators have been a little coy about whether they were treating this as a hate crime. they were looking at it threw the lens of a hate crime. now we see firve charges of firt degree murder and a bias crime. among the lgbtq community here in colorado springs they've been saying it was a hate crime directed at their community. two law enforcement sources told cnn that this 22-year-old suspect purchased these firearms himself. that is raising questions. why did it not trigger any red flags because he has had previous run-ins with law enforcement? last summer he -- his mother called police to say that this young man was threatening her with a bomb and other weapons. he was arrested by police here. however, he was never formally charged. charges were not pursued. that wouldn't necessarily show up on a background

stephanie: i know you were actually at the vigil last night in colorado springs.been to other vigils and you are meeting with members of the community. what is the response shaping up to look like from mbers of the community? what d they want to do now? >> i was at the vigil yesterday afternoon and i think at this point, it has only been 36 hours and our community is really trying to come together to ensure that all of our members who have been harmed, who are dealing with grief, that they have the resources they need. we want them to know that we care for them and we love them. for those local leaders, like the executive director of inside out in colorado springs, the only youth center in the area, we have provided them the resources they need and the support they need to get through in these next weeks and months. stephanie: we still don't know the motivations of the shooter, but investigators are looking at this through the lens of it possibly being a hate crime. as you learn the scant details that we know, is there any other way for you to see this attack? >>

rosa flores is live in colorado springs with the latest. what are you hearing? >> reporter: well, kate, i just got off the phone with a city and police pio who say that the suspect, 22-year-old anderson lee aldrich is still in the hospital. he's still has not been booked which also means charges have not been filed but that the place are there with him at this hour. also, just into cnn, two law enforcement sources telling my colleague evan perez that according to the sources, that aldrich purchased both weapons recovered at the scenes and describing them as an ar-style rifle and a handgun and the timing of the purchase of those weapons is unclear but here is an important point, there was a case linked to aldrich from 2021 in june of 2021 when his mother called the police about a bomb threat that his son was in the home with -- with home made bombs and ammunition and also handguns while police responded to the scene and later and cnn are investigative teams with able to obtain video showing aldrich walking outside of the home barefoot with his hands up in the air
