we actually promoted colorado springs as a destination for people with tuberculosis. it was, really for colorado first and ne of our only industries -- was healthcare. colorado springs was founded in a place without a major became y and healthcare the major industry through the 1880's to the 1940's. so in the early years, they would come -- and you can see would s gallery -- they waters in manitou, they would spend time in the they would the gods, spend time outdoors. shortly after the founding of colorado springs in 1871, a new method for treating tuberculosis was developed in europe. called the senatorial movement. sanatoriums were there with treating the disease. it was managed healthcare in which you are under the close of doctors and nurses who provided a daily of rest, fresh air, excellent diet, and monitoring by healthcare professionals. those things combined helped to lead to a cure, reportedly come up to 60% of the time. because of how closely connected colorado springs is to this movement, we have a collection related to tuberculosis treatment. of them is this cola bottle. manitou cont

colorado springs and had been in colorado springs for eight years. himself coming in 1884. and so literally about a month later, spencer penrose arrived in colorado springs and that started a lifelong partnership between the two gentlemen. it just so happened that when dick penrose reintroduced spencer to his longtime t,ildhood friend, chaz tut that was just the beginning of creek and the gold rush. so it was perfect timing for penrose to come up to colorado springs, so much so that when he arrived, my great-grandfather had just found a mine called the cash on delivery mine. the c.o.d. c.o.d. mine was the same gold vein across cripple creek. bob was a gentleman who actually found gold in cripple creek. my great-grandfather sold mr. penrose half interest in the c.o.d. mine for $500 and loan him the money. our records of the foundation show that spencer penrose , starting about 1909, frankly as we are starting to build up towards world war i and there is great demand for copper. he was getting dividends himself of over a million dollars every year. that was not only a lot of money today but it was significant act then. -- back then. and so he start

colorado springs, colorado. watching american history tv. all weekend, every weekend on c-span 3. >> for as long as people have settled and lived in this area, pike's peak has been a marketing tool. we have used it to help identify this location. pike's peak protrudes out onto the eastern plains. it is the first 14,000 foot mountain that you reach when you are coming west across the plains towards denver. it is a beacon in many ways for people who are traveling towards the mountains. i remember many times growing up in the midwest, coming to colorado, and knowing you're almost there when you start to see pike's peak in the distance. you can see it from 100 or more miles east of here. it is this thing that seems to pull you in as you're coming west. right now we are at crystal reservoir. we are at 9500 feet. perhaps one of the best views in the world. in 1779, when thomas jefferson and others were declaring independence on the east coast, this area was claimed by the spanish. in 1779, spanish colonial forces came within a few miles of where we are now. they were exploiting the region and searching for hostile american indian people. in 1806, montgomery play equus sent into the west to the explore the region. pike was sent to the southwest part of the territory. from his perspective, when he came out here, you walked off the map. his mission was to be the first american official to carry word of american ownership of this region to the american indian people. to create a map of the region. to identify resources that were here in the

colorado springs colorado. it was sent into the american southwest to explore the region. lewis and clark who were sent to the northwestern part of the newly required louisiana territory. pike was sent to the southwest part of the territory. from his perspective when he came out here, he got off the map. he went to an area which was unknown. it, he thinks you will reach the top of it in a few days but it takes him weeks to approach. what we believe is a lower mountain on the flank called not rosa. thatote in his journal given the conditions, given the equipment they had, no one could've summited the peak. it inspired the palm that became america the beautiful. colorado springs to teach a summer course at colorado college in 1893. the view down to the plains from the top of the mountain inspired the poetry, it inspired the images that are captured in the poetry of the united states. >> watch all of the events from colorado springs today at 2:00 eastern on american history tv on c-span3. >> louisiana voters head to the polls in a race that will ultimately decide control of the united states senate. tonight, the major candidates face off in the race for the u.s. senate. now, live from lsu, here is tonight's moderator. >> good evening.
