i'm the provost of columbia university. and my role tonight to be your host and moderator and emcee. and after the remarks have been made i'll probably moderate the discussion a little bit. it should be a very interesting discussion this evening. it's just all too rare that the topic of what makes research universities so valuable to society gets talked about. even in those universities. a real hope of mine is that jonathan's new book, which so magnificently addresses these questions, will help to change that. that it will help us all take a step back and get a better understanding of these institutions. institutions that have been so central in many of our lives. and that it will help society get a better sense of the value that these institutions hold for a society of a distinct kind of contribution that they make toward the american way of life and the world for that matter. i am as just noted the new provost at columbia having begun my term on september 1st of this year. i've known jonathan for a good while now. he was

there's columbia. we're watching howard county and baltimore city and our friends in randallstown and pikesville and owens mills we're up to nine inches in owennings mills. this is the heavy band. i'm going to pull back and highlight how easily and quickly this thing shows up. we were watching this develop from the west slowly work its way across baltimore. it's right on top of marysville. we have eldersberg coming in with a report of about 13 and a half inches. that was about an hour ago. you may be up to 15 now. we go up 95 and we go up 893 up towards the harford zone. we have over a foot in shrewsberry. lighter amounts of snow in bel air. i've been pointing out harford and cecil county to get the bulls eye here. and we have some heavy snow. it's heavier back to the west. the thing is this heavy band that we've been watching that, is part of that developing storm that are is going to pivot its way to the east and may sit on top of you a little longer and allow to you play catchup and maybe surpass. i

and there was all of the rioting at columbia.and you couldn't study for -- so it was kind of interesting to me clearly a lot of things were going in '68 for worth students expressing themselves about. but it clearly disrupted a lot of the issues and questions. i think it's an interesting point as to how far you go with it. i also, but now i can see activism, for instance, you were talking about new orleans this morning when i was talking about doing something locally. and a lot of the students at dew lain were trying to repair enormous. that is an appropriate kind of community service or at georgetown, a lot of the students were the moving force behind doing something about darfur. so that there is a lot of kind of networks and linkages that i think are very important, kind of leads to the question about, i do think that, universities can do a lot about promote the ing ecology and worrying about the environment in a lot of different ways through teaching about it, as well as encouraging people to do something about it. in terms o
