we have behind me the smokehouse in the district of columbia. and now we're going to walk into the garage. in 1913 the peter family built the garage, and we've got what's probably our largest artifact in the collection in front of me. the 1919 pierce roadster that belonged to peter iii. his parents bought it for him in 1919. and what's interesting about is a number of elements were customized for him. he was 6'2", so things like the steering column were adjusted to account for his height. so one of my favorite things about the car is it's got his monogram right here on the door, ap3 for armstead peter iii. he loved it and kept it for the rest of his life. he had it expensively restored in the 1970s and could be seen driving around in it. here's a picture showing him sitting at the wheel of the car. so the garage was built in 1913, 1914, but the part of the garage we're standing in now was added in 1968. the most interesting part of this addition is actually what's beneath our feet, the bomb shelter we're going to go into right now. so we're now
