and columbus was really sort of an anomaly. they've had a strong economic growth throughout that time, so i think that you really do see sort of that dichotomy of the chamber of commerce republican versus a more maybe tea party or more rural voter in this district. it's a very good microcosm, i think, for the rest of the country. >> the other question, too, is what republicans stay home. we're going to see that in this race and also midterms. it's not just who you're turning out but the quiet voters who aren't going to show up. >> and that's a great point there. that's where we've seen a lot of the suburban women factor in. they just stay home. and this president, can he get voters to come out to vote for congress? in those rural areas, it's a fascinating question. you say, i'm with the president, but i don't care about congress. >> a big piece of that trump strategy is sort of relying on a depressed vote for your opponents. that seems to be one of the trends here so far post-trump. democrats don't seem to be staying home in an

, the immediate columbus suburb, a place that hillary clinton won in 2016. the early vote here, o'connor sitting at 80%, and balderson sitting at 19%. you go back to 2016 and in the early vote here, we think trump got about low 30% in the early vote. this is where democrats need to run up the score and get a ton of people out there to the polls. this is balderson's base, zanesville, muskingum county. so really, the story is balderson as election day counted. a key is going to be delaware county. this is more than a quarter of the district right here. if a republican isn't winning delaware and isn't get a healthy margin out of delaware, that district is in big trouble. this is the early vote for delaware county. this could be subject to wild swings. but balderson, this is a big thing we are going to be watching in the next hour or two. can balderson get ahead of o'connor. if he does that, that is going to be a key thing tonight. >> so the numbers with we are going to see right now, counting that early vote. wildly in favor of democrat o'connor. don't bracket

this is columbus. we said the early votes is going to favor o'connor.2016 in the early vote in franklin county, donald trump got about 32%. so the republican tonight running at 19%, this is an estimate. it might have been lower than that. but there is reason to look at that and suspect this is a reason that early, first number that we are getting that makes d democrats optimistic. >> this is the problem for republicans. it is a bank shot to get people to vote for you to support trump. if you are going to vote for trump, you vote for trump. going out on a hot august day to vote for some guy balderson that you never heard of in order to send a message to the world because you like trump. that is a bank shot. and bank shots are not that successful. >> depending on how they angle. >> suburbs, however this shakes out. even if balderson wins elsewhere, the energy of the democrat base in the heart of the democratic portion of the district. >> that mirrors what you have seen in the past year and a half. a lot of work around registering new people to vote and so

this is that part of columbus right here, upscale suburbs right outside columbus, bleeding over intoan half the vote in the district will be come out right here. you see franklin county, hillary clinton won this by 18 points. that was a big surge in the democrats' direction. a third of the votes out of franklin, the democratic base. tomorrow night, the question is, is o'connor able to match or exceed hillary clinton's number there? and what's the turnout like there? delaware county, again, talking suburbs. trump won it by 16, but for a republican, that's bad. these are republicans who -- some of them, at least, were not comfortable with trump. again, if that republican number there is close to 55 tomorrow, that's very good news for the democrats. but the rest of this district, right up here, sort of the northern part, right down here, licking, zanesville, mansfield up here, this is the other america we talk about so much. blue collar, white-noncollege, huge, and i mean huge swings in 2016 to donald trump. while this part of the district was swinging away from trump, down here, how ab

in columbus, ohio where the gop is wondering why is this so hard. right now in a closely watched special election in ohio's 12th, dan o'connor and state senator troy balderson are neck in in this case neck in a district donald trump won by 11 points. a district that has been red since 1939. aside from a two-year blip in the '80s. now it is a district that could easily turn blue. >> not just women, i think men are as well a little confused what's going on in the republican party and everybody is kind of looking to support the best candidate rather than be more a partisan issue. >> do you normally vote for republicans or democrats? >> i tend to be a conservative testimony i wou democrat i would say. >> was it something about o'connor. >> it is more about sending a message. i mean, the republicans have to wake up. if they are not going to be a break on this guy, then we vote for the other side. i think a lot of people are really scared. despite a $500,000 get out the vote campaign and outside conservative groups pouring more than $3 million into tv ads

a lot of suburbs of columbus. not strong manufacturing base.onment could when the district. the national media has come in recently because what you do and that's understandable. this is a tossup district and has been. the lucky thing. >> blake: you say it is a tossup district, but the outgoing congressman won by 27 - 40 points in the last three races. how is that a swing district? >> it is this time because the environment nationally and the historical trends of the losing party. this is a solid district for republicans but it could go to the other side. democrats have enthusiasm. the republicans have a candidate that fits the district. in the mold of john kasich when he was running before. would you have a good candidate and he's doing grassroots and you have a turnout mechanism like this you can easily see a place where the blue wave crashes. >> blake: monmouth university put out a pull. how closely have you been following the campaign? 24% say very closely. somewhat closely, 42%. those numbers were six and 35% in june. many more people now

on that was 20 miles outside of columbus, ohio. he is urging farmers and others feeling the pinch to hold the line and that help will be coming. to give you a sense of what we're dealing with, this is a capacity crowd inside the auditorium. between 27 and 3000 people inside the auditorium. there so many people outside that they had to fill two other overflow rooms. some people have been waiting since 3:00 a.m. to hear president trump speak. >> we expect the president to be emerging shortly. we will take it back there lie. in the meantime let's bring in jeff mason, a white house correspondence. this is a big deal for this white house. >> it's absolutely a big deal, otherwise president trump would not be there. it's a sign that they are all in for the election. also for the november midterm election i think it is a sign that they are going to be hitting the trail a lot in the weeks and months to come. >> it is anybody's guess as to why the race has turned so tight. balderson had a bout a ten-point lead a month or so ago. it is now a

franklin county, part of columbus, immediate suburbs. this part of the district. in 2016, trump comes along. the margin explodes. last night, it continues to explode and it goes to 31 points. democrats winning in the suburbs by 31 points. let's take a trip to different part of the country, the state of ohio and culturally the country, muskingum county surrounded by rural areas. in 2012 barack obama won this part of the district. he won it be a hair. but this was blue in 2012. in 2016, donald trump comes along and suddenly republicans win it by 29%. balderson wins it by 33%. these areas voting almost the same in 2012. and six years later, 64 points apart. that is much bigger than a divide. little bit exaggerated because it is balderson's home county, o'connor's home county. where is the energy for the midterms this year, the answer here. more energy right now in that democratic suburban area. up next, rudy giuliani calling on mueller to wrap up the russia probe after rejecting the special counsel's latest term for a trump sit down. much o

this is densely populated columbus. very near columbus suburbs right here. and danny o'connor's been gobbling up 65% of the vote here. and if you'd told democrats at the start of tonight he's getting 65% there they would have been very happy. but there's only a small number of precincts. 99 erase p of them are in out of franklin county. o'connor has almost exhausted all of it. he could get i little bit more. the only other thing then that is left on the board with o'con or ahead 201 and maybe squeezing a few extra votes still out of franklin county, delaware county. we have 2/3 of the vote in in delaware county. balderson, the republican running, getting a 53% clip right now. we're just taking a look a minute ago at the precincts. the individual precincts. we could tell you this. what did donald trump get in 2016 in delaware county? he got 55%. balderson is running under that. we just took a look a minute ago. this is by no means comprehensive. the precincts that are left. how many of them are precincts where trump did better or worse than that 55%? i think

his speech was somewhat subdued in columbus. it was a fundraising dinner. it wasn't the same kind of atmosphere you would normally see at a rally. there is no way to sugarcoat this. this is a terrible week for the president and it strikes at the heart of loyalty he always insists upon his aides and his ability to control the future of these investigations. he's had three people essentially turn their backs on him in the span of a week. i was speaking to a long-time trump advisor who said that michael cohen is actually someone who he can't control now even though he's president. president trump can sit at the resolute desk. he's the commander in chief. he can press a button and have a diet coke instantly appear and yet, he can't control michael cohen and that speaks to the predicament that he finds himself in. >> shannon, along those same basic lines, what does it tell you they had no idea the cfo had an immunity deal? >> well, i think sometimes maybe rudy is not informed on all the various legal matters. he's informed on things dealing with the mueller inve

look at the columbus part of this district, first columbus and franklin county, about a third of all the votes cast tomorrow are going to come from this small land area right here. this is college educated, white collar professional class, higher income. we've talked about these folks here. they are the ones that are most offended we found by donald trump. you saw this was a district that hillary clinton won by 18 points. that was a big improvement for democrats verse what they normally do. you look immediately north suburbs here in delaware county, trump won this in 2016 but that's worse than republicans normally do here. between these two parts of theies here in this district about 60% of the vote is going to come out tomorrow night and it's the story of that suburban backlash against donald trump. is balderson going to struggle relatively speaking like trump did? the rest of the district, though, the opposite story. we talk about those blue collar white voters, look at these margins. trump won by 29 points. obama carried this part of the district in 2012. it swung that hard to tru
