i spent hours upon hours working on the comcast/nbc merger and raised significant, we think, questions about that merger. we understand how they operate now. i mean, we learned an awful lot about some of the agencies and programs that came in to support them. we learned about how they make contributions to nonprofit organizations. we were not talking about whether or not you contribute to churches and civil rights groups and all of that. we were talking about wether or noyour coany, your business, is diverse, whether or not it's reflted in your management. we talked about whether or not the programmin at nbc, et cetera opened up opportunities for independent operators. we talked about some serious and significant issues. we got outplayed because they were able to roll in a lot of folks who had gotten contributions for their yearly conventions and their churches and all of that, and i'm just wondering whether or not those of us who are concerned about consolidation and mergers should just stop fighting these things altogether and allow them to come in with the conditions that they think

. >> federal regulators today approved the purchase by comcast of a majority stake in nbc universal fromeneral electric. this merger will create a $30 billion media company with cable, broadcast, internet, motion picture and theme park components. >> jon: thanked god. now if i have my cable go out and i go to a theme park and choke on a giant fried turkey leg right before i find out my favorite show got canceled i only have to call one number to complain. this monopoly is awesome. i don't know why this doesn't happen more often. right. because it's illegal. which is why it had to be approved by the fcc. the same people who freak out when boobs pop out of a super bowl or keep me from saying things like (beep) or (beep beep (. in fact, if i cover my mouth even just say like (beep) no one knows but they will get it and they will bleep it. part of the fcc's job is making sure that the media companies don't get too powerful or they might start doing stuff like trademarking the names of heroic military units for their own financial games. those (beep). you know, stuff like this. >> the merger

was last here on the senate floor talking to you about net neutrality back in december when the nbc-comcast merger had not yet been approved by the f.c.c. or department of justice. i was warned this would be the first in a cascade of media consolidation deals. wouldn't you know it, just two months later. at&t announced another $39 billion deal with t-mobile. this merger which wall street applauded is almost assuredly going to be a raw deal for consumers. if approved, we will have a duopoly in wireless telecommunications in this country. 80% of the wireless space will be controlled by just two companies: at&t and verizon. i look forward to the hearing next week when the antitrust subcommittee and judiciary committee so we can further explore the issues this have deal. but i think it's fair to say that i am skeptical because it's likely to raise prices and certainly reduce choice for consumers. i've always been skeptical of media consolidation because at the end of the day when corporations have tremendous amounts of power to control prices and cripple competitors to benefit their bottom line
