"the times" notes earlier this year they ran the odds of one person being selected for an audit. those odds are about 1 in 30,600, which raises obvious questions about how two of trump's most visible critics were both selected for an audit. in a statement to cnn earlier this year, the irs denied any politically motivated audits. kelly told "the times" that he believes that he was successful in guiding trump away from seeking out such investigations. still the head of the irs has asked a watchdog to investigate the decision to conduct audits on that pair earlier this year. mccabe told cnn over the summer that it just -- it defied logic to think there was

here is a second question on the same person, jeffrey comey should be paying him for his input -- you should be paying him for his input. did it go through appropriate notice of comment to treasury? normally the cancellation of indebtedness income including those associated from those kinds of things? caleb: one thing that we saw, from congress, is during the pandemic, congress passed a statute saying any federal student loan cancellation, or forgiveness under any program will not be taxed as student loan income until 2025. there are certain exceptions. essentially, what the statute suggests, and what the correct interpretation is that this kind of cancellation does not have federal income tax consequent the. -- consequences. before -- because it is occurring before 2025. the state have a different view. indiana's treatment of this, they passed a statute saying, existing congressional programs like public service loan forgiveness, find will not text that as income. any future programs we will. that would include this. i think, i think in a lot of ways we all saw this coming. a lot of

it's four days into his presidency, and eight days after he fired fbi director james comey, donald trumpbert mueller had been pointed special counsel. his campaign is in the 15 election. he reportedly told to close advisers at the time, quote, oh my god. this is terrible and this is the end of my presidency, i am effed. this is those who wanted to see the indictment against then president. but, they welcomed it. they welcomed with open arms. then, he saw robert mueller's or traditional knight in shining armor. finally, someone who would hold trump to account. after nearly two years, after 37 indictments, after trump doing everything in his power to discredit the special counsel. after all of that, you know how this ends. trump, for a lack of a better term, got off. a large part of that narrative, of trump being vindicated, well, that was set when trump's close ally, and attorney general at the time, bill barr, effectively, and he kept the report before was published. he downplayed their finding, and said that mueller found nothing. despite the report being one of the most damning indictm

do you head down the road of trying to explain it in the way that comey did.ng that so you're seeing the difficulties that the department faces when it has such a politically charged investigation. and this one probably, the most politically charged that there could be. especially with a candidate running for office. it's not just how you investigate it, but even on the back end, how would you explain the fact of the charging decisions? could you simply tell the public, well, we didn't think there was enough here, so we didn't charge, that's it, that's all we're telling you. in recent years, there's been some expectation from the public that they would have some understanding of what went into those decisions. so we're -- you know, this is just up with part, today just one part of the larger sort of myriad of issues that come up when you have these high-profile political investigations. they just have aspects to them that other ones don't. and the principle that everyone has looked at and treated equally under the law is a central tenant of the united states,

james comey, obviously now. he was talking to the press too much a lot of people argued. any idea how smith is going to handle this case considering how interested the public is? >> he's a career prosecutor. justice department animal and tradition there are that you don't talk about your cases other than in court. especially around, crime, grand jury information. but you're right. robert mueller took it a step further because there were many times in an investigation where people had stories that were just flat wrong and the mueller team just refused to correct them. so we can only hope if that happens in this case that the people representing special counsel to the justice department will at least weigh in and try to steer reporters on background. but actually, i mean, most people i talk to expect jack smith to run a pretty tight ship and if anything, the circle of information now becomes smaller so we may actually see fewer leaks about this case. >> ken dilanian, thank you very much. blaine, let's go to what's happening in georgia right now. also in georgia, there's tha
