>> i think the bottom line is it is hard to get scale in commerce.nk about that companies that have done well outside of local, they all have scale. they can have massive networks. they don't have to worry about critical mass in every market. >> drugstore.com or amazon.com huge businesses. you are not constrained by local. now it is different because more people have internet access and mobile phones than ever before but why in the current environment a lot of startups are focused on local -- what gives you the advantage? >> in general the hardest thing about local is that it is not a virtual community, it is a real community. so building a service that can successfully replicate what it's like to live in a neighborhood is the biggest challenge. all we think about is community and how to build community and how to create a product to help communities get bigger and stronger. >> what are your two or three biggest sources of revenue? >> we will probably invest deeply in making recommendations, making those some form of monetization. most people say you

the first is mobile commerce and obviously everyone has a mobile phone today, but mobile commerce is its earliest days, and what's going to happen with mobile commerce is, it's going to grow largely by what i would call internetizing the 90% of total retail sales today which is still off line. e-commerce is less than 10% of total retail sales. and as that happens, and what i mean by internet ties, real-time rhythm and customer targeting so the world will be in a time selling environment. and so mobile commerce is going to grow like topsy. >> how high can the number get? >> well, i think it effectively the whole world will be on the internet with mobile commerce as long as the -- all these companies, big box retailers, are signed up for it. and there's a few implications of that in terms of functionalities that have to be built out to make it happen. let me put that aside because to your question, to me, the more important trend is the explosive arrival of social media. it's 2 billion consumers worldwide. united by a single benefit which is effectively sharing, collaboration, communit

they do so at the lowest possible costs so that we energize commerce, we don't destroy commerce. we are conflict free with regard to picking winners and losers. now hold that thought. in europe they attempted all this. there were no serious takers. they said would anybody else like to do these three things. no serious takers. so is there some value in having someone just focused on energizing commerce with no conflict of interest and who is charging as little as they possibly can to survive? i think so. i think that's the very definition of a national infrastructure. >> it did work in sweden. sweden is has the most competitive open system and it's worked quite well in sweden, but. i would not claim that sweden that the problems facing a small homogeneous society and one facing ours are the same. it would be different and more complicated, but they went to full privatization. >> the last question to the lady up here. >> i'm an attorney. i got involved in postal issues when the post office by my house was closed, even though it was very profitable. so i'm in favor of post offices.

and commerce during the coming supply chain. as the world as more digital and the supply chain being disrupted from design and manufacture all the way to the delivery of the product. supply links are going digital. leaving behind digital services that cannot become digital and trying not to finance the middle men any longer. 3d printing and customers assembly lines. this point of view manufacturing. the entire supply chain to take straight off of the assembly line to the residence and nothing in between. a 1-stop shop the entire supply chain. pure commerce, and the supply chain. and increasingly global marketplace not unable to buy u.s. goods without u.s. delivery address. the banking industry blocking transactions for citizens and that friction to commerce. mobile banking with the branch in everybody's palm. even before this began, one out of 12 americans did not have a a bank account. bank branches may shrink from where they are today, 10,000 bank branches remaining. high-cost payday loans stepped into that vacuum that is rapi

in our senate commerce committee, we hold admiral brown in such high regard that we have reported his nomination twice one last congress and again during our very first markup, and it was unanimous. now, the second nominee is mr. carlos monje an assistant secretary for policy. he will play a major important role in shaping national transportation policy and priorities. the department of transportation, for example plays a critical role in helping ensure safety in the airspace, as well as protecting consumers. so last friday, since i did not go back to my state i went with the f.a.a. administrator we went to the next generation air traffic control modernization progress that is being made in the f.a.a. research and development center at the atlantic city airport. nextgen capitalizes on existing technologies such as g.p.s. capability provided by the department of defense satellite network, and what it will do is make our air traffic control systems safer and more efficient. mr. president, how that works is right now we have a series of resource and the resource, if it is an up to date r

we continue to work with 72 chamber of commerces throughout san francisco and the bay area and some of the california based organizations because we know that information is best received when it comes directly from the source of the san francisco african-american chamber of commerce, the asian american contractors association and so forth so the bottom line we don't leave any stone unturned regarding those 72 chamber of commerces. we wanted to be innovative and we know needs and technical assistance are needed on small business. one of the programs that we have been successful with is the mental program and if bijan sartipi was here he would talk about this and we took the model and with women owned businesses in construction and steel. we're working with a wonderful african-american business and right now she's seeing great results as communicating her value to large businesses so this long-term six month and one year relationship and the mentor program has been really successful. we worked with a lot of the organizations in the city to kind of up line cards, and help with the intere
