can we get a reading by commissioner sanchez, cook and haney? >> in support of a formal process in the renaming of san francisco unified district schools, they've been enduring pride to the residents of city and county of san francisco and where families are invested and dedicated to the schools which they attend, work at or send their children, as well as to all schools at large making our network an integral part of the social fabric and making our big city more accessible and embracing of our diverse community. and the renaming of the schools is the result of school communities petitioning the sf board of education, citing to have them accurately reflect our values, and add voice to those in the community who have been underserved, and the focus of concerted efforts to deny life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. where efforts to rename schools for the intentions above, have understandably won counter opposition for a host of reasons, not least of them the attachment of a school name to a beloved institutional and because the name of the

[applause] >> president mendoza-mcdonnell: vice president cook and then commissioner haney. >> e >> vice-president cook: i've admired our policy as a district. we should be proud of the students we've had. i will say a little more but where are you going next year? >> i will be attending ucla. >> i will be right across the bay at berkeley. >> vice-president cook: impressive. i also wanted to commend your leadership on the issue around school performance fees and you stepped right into that. i think that -- there's also been a lot of thoughtful engagement about how to involve your students and these issues across the city. i'm excited that thurgood marshall is represented in leadership next year. t-train, what's up? [laughter] and that we're bringing on new people that are really committed to ensuring that this district is working on behalf of students. students are our biggest constituency and should be driving policy. i want to commend commissioner mendoza for shifting up the seats a bit so we can have the students at the heart of the conversation. >> president mendoza-mcdonnell: commissioner han

really grateful for the partnership that is here now and i credit that to working with you, commissioner cook, as well as commissioner walton and the leadership of superintendent matthews. >> it is a great question. i would also say to the point of best practice that the focus on race and placed through data, that the district has allowed has been extraordinary. the pitch schools don't perfectly align, but they pretty closely do. we know where our families are living and we know where the families are who are disproportionately impacted in san francisco. we know where they are. the district has absolutely opened up a data conversation where i can track my young person, and we can look at that family and how many brothers and sisters live in that house and i can go and work with providers. that model will allow us to keep families of san francisco and move them up with the mobility pathway. the issues are challenging, but if there is more that can be done, in confidence, there is not that many. and we are seeing that. >> i knew both of you would be honest. if we were going to talk about this w

commissioner cook? you've already taken care of that. report from curriculum, commissioner norton. >> commissioner norton: there were two items on the agenda, the first was the petition for the mary l. booker leadership academy. that petition was given a negative recommendation by the committee. the other item was informational item on really a very broad array of summer programming that students will receive this summer. and options. it seems like it's been expanded a lot during the time i've been on the board. and it was very interrogatory interesting to -- very interesting to hear about all the summer options to students. >> president mendoza-mcdonnell: thank you. board delegates to membership organizations. anyone have any reports on that? all other reports by board members? anyone have anything else to mention? >> commissioner murase: thank you, i wanted to announce the strengthening k-12 arts town hall, sfusd representatives want to hear from the community about shaping the future of arts education. there is one remaining town hall

[inaudible] >> that's what i was going to say next, if i could be a coauthor -- okay, and if maybe we could all put our names -- add our names to the resolution, that would be great. i just want to say a couple things about prop 13. it sounds like this may be the first resolution that this board is passing on specifically prop 13, which is amazing that nothing has been authored before, specifically about this, but prop 13 has been tackled a couple of times in the past. i want to thank you all of california for the work that they've been doing on prop 13. they know as well as i do it's been tackled twice. one was in '99. when the deal was made, they had the petition signed, they had money to put it on the ballot. the polling showed that it would pass to do what essentially we're saying now, but there was a last-minute deal with the governor, and others to take it off the ballot in exchange for a one-time raise for teachers acro

this goes deeper into, once again, the questions that many of you asked, and you especially commissioner cooke. lead leaders have walk-throughs on-sites, and will receive training on given instructional and receiving feedback. the district needs to continue developing its strategy for attracting and retaining teachers. you can see the status there. h.r. is conducting exit surveys to gather data regarding the reasons employees leave the district. we've prioritized increasing salaries for attracting and retaining staff, and our collective bargaining and budget priority. and we're also partnering successfully with the city to provide affordable housing with the city. continuing on community engagement, e.p.c. should continue working with the board committee to bring a well articulated policy recommendation to the board, and the status is the staff continues to work with and bring recommendations to the ad hoc committee on student assignment. the next recommendation is district sites, sf csd's office of family and community engagement and the communication division need to continue the development

this article that diane gray wrote, the article that commissioner cooke and i wrote, we're not going to let people define our narrative anymore, so if we have to -- [applause] >> -- if we have to be out being the marketing for the value of the great schools that exist in our community, we will do so. so no matter what underhanded, misguided, subjective villain form, mischievous and misinformation they use, our schools are changing. let me just say what an sfusd education can do. i want you to look at that black man sitting in the middle, superintendent of our public school system. got his entire education, all the way through his doctorate in the city and county of san francisco in our public school system. [applause] >> dr. vincent matthews, i want you to look at the president of this board of education, and the vice president of this board of education. both commissioner mendoza-mcdonnell and commissioner's stephen cooke got their education compliments of sfusd. and you can continue to look in this city, and you can see that a current member of the board of supervisors, supervisor

another thing was said, commissioner cooke, you said something amazing, you said all racist murals are not okay in the school district. so not just looking at washington murals, but there's a mural with a naked native child on the walls, naked, painted on the walls of mission high school, so that's also something to think about, as well. the last point that i want to bring up, as well, is that i want to really talk about narrative, right, because when we were here fighting off the charter school, we talked about we don't want anyone to define our narrative, right? that was what shimon walton said, right? what about our narrative? i've seen so many racist things working in sfusd, talking about m manifest destiny. i've seen books about columbus, you just passed indigenous peoples day. i just want to think about that these murals are not just something like whatever, we have native students going there. i also want to keep it real that american indian education, we always think about -- u. u.s.tribes, but there's mayan students. you have a lot of students in sfusd that you're accountable.

and central office leaders are held accountable through the evaluation process, which was commissioner cooke's question, and we're using academic results from state and district assessments, behavioral data and climate and s.e.l. data to assist us in evaluating the effectiveness of our administrators. so that's the area of organizational capacity and alignment, the second area. the third area is data analysis. these are the recommendations. there should be increased strategic district activity levels to aid our strategic plan. once again a district team with input and feedback from our site leaders have identified key strategics and progress measures for pitch. i'll be talking about that in a few minutes. the second recommendation was the district board needs to establish a very clear picture of what data. we talked about that earlier. the community has the ability to access data through our links on our website, but the bigger picture here is we want to make sure the board is establishing what data we want year over year so we can actually measure the progress of the district and the progress

. >> commissioner haney, vice president cooke, and then, commissioner walton. >> thank you, to everybody who came out tonight. i have a couple comments and questions. the first is when did we start contracting with revolution foods? >> it was in january of 2013, the board passed the resolution in 2012, december of 2012. >> so one concern, and i expressed this in the budget committee, as well, we had an increase of 10% in the number of meals served annually, that's mostly in breakfast, where we've expanded our breakfast in the classroom program. we've seen a pretty devastating drop in the number of lunches that are being consumed. and i think that when we brought on revolution foods, the understanding -- 'cause we actually going to pay more than we were prior at the time was that we were going to makeup for that in part by having more students eat lunch, and it actually looks like we have about a 350,000 meals drop in the number of lunches that are being consumed. so my concern is i realize that, you know, they're doing taste tests and this's all these different ways it sounds like they'r

cook: i want to thank my coauthor commissioner sanchez and hail leadership. i knew that he took a lot of heat for that. but at its core, when you really stand for the social justice, that kind of comes with what you believe. and so partnering with commissioner sanchez to put this together and thinking about how to engage the community around the history we have to reconcile, we all came to this place in different ways. and i think the type of backlash that we've seen thus far is a result that people are trying to hold onto lift that isn't inclusive or welcoming to everybody. having a heritage in this country that connects back to slavery and looking at the constitution and seeing that my people were 3-5th human and now to be elected member in the city like san francisco, speaks to some progress we've had as a country. and we have to continue to reconcile a history of people that were committed grave harms to humanity. and so, what is in a name? what does it mean for a city that proclaims to be progressive to carry names of people who committed mass murder? or

support of increased support and transparency for charter schools, being introduced by commissioners sanchez and cooke. so we normally spend just a few minutes on public comment on this, but i have several speakers. so i'm just going to give you each a minute because there's several of you, but if i could get deidre elmsumi, guadalupe, darren, mana moreno, and saba aguilar. this is section j, and this is the public comment on the two items that we'll get introduced after public comment. so come on up, and we'll give you each a
