here is the map of the super committee as we know it. this shows the states in congressional districts that they represent. when nancy pelosi adds her three choices, three more congressional districts will be included. the committee will represent 15.2% of the american people. the committee could have represented more people than that simply by choosing one senator from california, both of whom are democrats, so one of them would be a democrat, and one senator from texas. both of those senators are republicans, so that would be a democrat and republican. one senator from california, one senator from texas represent the two most populous states, together they represent 20% of our population. if you then threw in a new york senator, which would be a democrat, and a florida republican senator, and then throw in a democrat from illinois and a republican from pennsylvania, which they do have in the mix already, you would get to 41%. and then the house members, all of whom represent roughly the same number of people, so it doesn't really matte

patty murray is the chair of the senate democrats on the committee. she is part of leadership in backing key will feel lot of discussion taking place between the caucus and those three folks. >> we had the bowles -some support which would increase tax revenue in the gang of six revenue sort of built on that with similar proposals. now you have president obama making the case recently on a daily basis that would be to compromise and have a balanced package. in his mind, a balanced package means cuts in entitlements and increases in tax revenues. is the president fundamentally wrong that that's where the middle is and where the compromise should be? >> i think most americans believe that in fact the president and the democrats have compromised far too much and of the republicans have given virtually nothing. you can correct me if i'm wrong. john boehner said after this package was passed that he got 90% of what he wanted. paul ryan said he got 75% of what he wanted. i did not hear any democrats talking about what they got. they did not get anything. the

, and you talk about a super committee, and 17 months ago the president convened a committee of the proposals not acted on by president and congress and now another committee and nobody is yet making the hard choices about two-thirds of the budget, which is entitlement spending. so what is healthy about this debate? >> well, it is certainly not been a healthy debate in the short term and the american people are sitting back and saying, you know, i'm going through tough things in my life, and these folks are sitting there arguing with each other and not compromising to do tough things particularly the house republicans this week. but i would say that the president laid out months ago a $4 trillion debt reduction plan and what we were striving to do with the speaker of the house is a big deficit reduction package that would not have a super committee, but we would have done it right now, and that is impossible. the speaker of the house pulled by the right wing of the party walked away from that, but the president is committed over the next few months as members of congress need to be as well th

what the triggers also do -- if either the committee fails or congress rejects the committee's product is that it will ensure that significant defendant reduction is enacted anyway. so when you -- either way you will have significant deficit reduction. we hope and we also believe that most members of congress and both parties hope that will will be accomplished through the joint committee because the alternative is so onerous. >> following up on that, the way the trigger is structured, it doesn't actually kick in until january of 2013. so what incentive does congress have and the committee have to act if the real pain doesn't come until january 2013 and it's not set up today the republicans -- [inaudible] >> well, i'm sure they'll have the same fight because there's, obviously, an honest set of differences about how -- how government should behave, its role, its effectiveness. and that will be a debate that will, i'm sure, take place throughout next year. the debate we won't be having is whether or not the debt ceiling should be raised. we will not have a situation where people will ho
