one more common core issue. the new chancellor of the state school system, betty rosa, said offhandedly recently, you know, if it were up to her, her kids would not take the common core. how was that received? >> i know betty a long time, and i think one of her concerns has always been english-language learners. and i think if you read her statements that followed that statement, she does believe in high standards. she was a superintendent in the bronx. she wanted her kids to be able to compete with other kids. but i think her objection, like many people's, is "how do we transparent and more with teacher input and involvement?" so i think betty and i would be very much in agreement going forward. >> i mentioned that politicians were using the common core as sort of an issue, and you said it's sort of knee-jerk -- you implied that. i read somewhere where you are not encouraging -- in fact, you're discouraging many schools from having what we all had when we were growing up in a presidential election year, so the

>> well, i mean, you know, as marnie said, it is aligned to the common core, so there's short answer, essay prompts. it's interdisciplinary, so there are research skills that you can build, and at the end of each chapter, there's a writing technique. so "how to write a beginning hook," "how to write an ending hook" -- you know, using the examples from the book and some of the techniques that i used to kind of tell my story. and so it really kind of gives teachers and students a tool that they can use to kind of teach character education through literacy, but also provide culturally relevant material. i think a lot of our kids don't read, particularly in the inner city, because they can't identify with the characters in the book, and i think what makes "playing up" so unique and different is that i tried to be as real as i possibly could without minimizing or embarrassing anybody or any character in the book. but i try to be real because i think people particularly want realism. you know, they want authenticity. and so a lot of these kids who read the book, they can find themselves som

common core does not have a required reading list. there's a recommend reading list and it is largely ignored in the implementation of common core. we don't want to tell people what to read. that sounds like prescriptions and we don't want to get to that because you start excluding things, telling people what to do and it's going to be too narrow and so on. so this leaves us with a students who haven't read a common book, and the problem is if people -- they don't have some cultural thing in common, you can't build a culture out of them. the schools in the report talk about community. well, they're right to say, one of the ways in which you have a community is people have read the same thing. they have some of the same cultural background. so this is one thing, one problem. the lack of any common reading that the program tries to address. two, students don't like to read. they don't read very much on their own. not just they don't have a common reading assignment in school or on their own. we might want to talk about harry potter. tha

steve: common core testing underway in schools across new york state. dari: the controversial exams have been redesigned from last year, but that is not enough for some parents and students. steve: jodi goldberg caught up with kids who decided to skip today's test. >> reporter: out of a class of 25 or so students at one elementary school in rockville center, these are the few who are taking the common core for english. the others who opted out filled the auditorium. this parent decided abbey and t.j. were better off not taking the test. 60 percent of students opted out. last spring 20 percent of students in the state refused to take the test. that number this go around is expected to be even higher. >> if it was done to assess their performance, i'd have them unfortunately, it's not. >> reporter: officials say the tests are an important yardstick to measure student abilities and won't be used for assessment for four years. fewer questions and no time limits are among the improvements they've made. some parents we spoke with say the change they're lookin
